Getting the Wheeling Fever
Okay so ive been filling up alot lately and gas is going up so I decided to see what kinda mileage im getting with my 1996 T100 Manual transmission. It turns out that I am only getting 14.5 MPG. any advice on what I can do to get a couple more miles to the gallon? Also isnt the t100 have a 24gallon tank or is it just 20?

How you running the skinny pedal? Taking yer time starting out? Or racing them lights?
How's that airflow sensor? Cleaned it lately?
Checked yer O? sensor?
Tune up lately? Oil/filter? Air filter? PCV valve? Vacuum hoses checked out?
Any extra weight yer carrying around that you shouldn't be?
Is this city or highway...or 50/50 mix?
Are yer hubs locked in?

On the highway with manual shift & 31" tires I get under 20 but close... 18ish.

I have never actually gotten 400 miles to the tank thou. I always add fuel before the light comes on!

well i checked the air filter it looks pretty good. i put new plugs in a month or two ago. i dont mess with my mass airflow sensor just because i know that they can be real touchy to any sort of oil thats why when u put in a K&N filter sometimes the oil gets on the mass airflow sensor and messes with *****. Just changed the oil and new filter, hubs are not locked in. I try not to hoss it off the line and I never go above 3,000 rpm's. Im just thinking for a toyota 14.5 miles to the gallon is pretty *****. any one messed with there cpu with a programer to get better mileage?

It is ok to use spray cleaner on the maf - we all do it! You are right about getting oil on it, any kind of coating (dirt) is bad for it. And you are right to use the denso filters and plugs from the dealer.

Like BamZipPow says think about your o2 sensor. Look at the front one (before the cat) to see if it's as old as everything around it. If it is, get a new one. If you are running rich due to old o2 sensor then you are hurting the cat and that is MONEY there.

Pull one of the vacuum hoses off the intake manifold and the idle should go funky. If it doesn't you have a vacuum leak.

Body Damage is Cool
97 3.4 AT. I get ~18 mpg average.

Watch your tire pressure. Low pressure creates a good bit of drag and can really pull down mileage. Run the pressure as high as you can stand it.

My mileage doesn't vary much normally. Be it highway driving, town driving, or pulling a trailer.

BUT... locking out overdrive once thoroughly killed gas mileage. Over around 75 mph drops my mileage. Lots of full throttle romping hurts my mileage.

I have a 1996 5spd 4x4, with 31x10.5 BFGs, Magnaflow exhaust and high-flow cat, and consistently get 20 mpg. I have gotten as high as 22 on the highway. When I haul a slide-in camper its more like 16. I also drive like a nun. Recently, my mpg dropped to 18. I cleaned the air filter (I have the Downey set up) and the throttle body. After looking at this link
I decided to clean the MAF. On my truck though, the MAF is a solid "vortex" style unit and is not serviceable as in that link. Maybe I am missing something there, but its not clear to me how oil from the filter would affect the MAF. In the end, I have found keeping on top of the air pressure in the tires to make a big difference. This summer I plan on switching to manual lockouts in the front and will be curious to see if I get any mpg boost.

Good luck

Since I spend most of my time on the road...I run my tires at 40PSI/45PSI front/back. Seems to work just fine fer me...
