I am just starting the rebuild of my 4d55 for my 91 ranger. I took some pictures of the tear down but I don't know how to post the pics up. It was really tired and low low on compression. I think I may just bore it out but I have to look at my options. I have a connection in AU to get all the parts I need. I am going to be building with more power hopefully 120ish hp. I am going to coat the pistons and build my own exhaust manifold, bigger turbo, extrude hone the injectors and build my own intake. It is also going to be intercooled. I will try to do the step by step thing for those that are interested. I know there is not that much info on these things.

Sounds cool. What turbo will you run? Are you buying new injectors or moding the stock ones?

Can anyone help out a greenhorn at this? My brother and I are looking into converting his 1989 montero v6 gas burner into a diesel. Which diesel motor will fit requiring the less mods.? We are trying to get him over to burn biodiesel and his gas burner is about to puke.
Thanks, Biowillie

I have alot of dodge cummins turbos laying around. I am going to try to run the holset hy9. it is kinda big but I already have it, so it is worth a try. I am going to do all pump mods right now and see what I get out of that. If I don't have enough fuel I will just getter the bigger nozzles out of a bigger mitsu motor. I am waiting on the rebuild kit right now, when I start assembling, I will try to post up some pics.

Thanks, Biowillie I would try to find a 4d56 or something like that. It should be pretty easy to retrofit. Just remember to make sure you have enough cooling capacity for the diesel you choose.

I was wondering where you people are finding parts for the 4d55 I just aquiered 2 dodge d50's neither were running when I got them. The injection pump was out on one of them. I took the pump off tonight and noticed the ballance shaft belt was off. The ballance shaft is locked down, pulled the cover off of the ballance shaft and found traces of water. The engine in the other one also has some internal problems its pretty much locked down has a little movement but not much, no holes in the block so I guess thats a plus. My local carquest store can get a rebuid kit for it but nothing in the was a ballance or a crank shaft. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to rethink the cummins turbo. Larger turbos take a lot more time to spool up. The stock turbo might be fine if you block the wastegate and add a guage.(might not want to take it over 25 psi which a stocker will likely produce) Just a thought.
If you want to get a lil goofy, I'm in the process of working out some #'s to set up a twin turbo outfit on mine.

i got all my rebuild parts from australia. I am just about done assembling the motor right now. I have a hy9 cummins turbo which has a small turbine housing. I know there will be some lag but I am going to give it a try. I want airflow, not so much boost. We will see how it turns out.

that turbo should work okay...it will definetly lag but if you have a good exhaust/intake it should be okay.
