Need a Spot
I performed a long block on my 84 22r about 1000 miles ago. Since then the timing chain has been pretty noisy and I couldn't rotate the distributor far enough to reach 0 degrees TDC (top gear 1 tooth off) Today I pulled the timing cover to check all the variuos issues. Under inspection I noticed that the timing chain guide on the left (passenger side) has a very deep groove in it, after only 1000 miles mind you. I am thinking this must be due to the tensioner malfunctioning and not taking up the slack on the back side....anyone agree or disagree?

Roll Me Over
*****
>>>*Note that the timing chain has side plates. The side plates, or links if you will, are designed to actually bed in until the rollers themselves contact.

The passenger side is loaded, as is the tensioner facing, so two grooves will form quickly in operation. The center area between the links where the roller itself rides in oil should show little if any wear, the two grooves will be quite noticeable.

This is perfectly normal, and it adds stability to the timing chain as it operates.

If the wear is ragged and appears wider than it should be, then suspect the tensioner. That tensioner design is very susceptible to any dirt, debris, or particles and can stick. If it does, the guides wear rapidly......*EB
