Body Damage is Cool
My '94 22-RE has developed a problem. I guess its had a very slightly rough idle for a while, but earlier today it was idling around like 500rpms. Then I took it on a light snow trail, beat it gently (I think this is coincidence) and now it will idle at <100rpms for a second, then jump to 500 for a sec, then loop back down to 100. Every now and then it will stall.

I have had a CEL come on and off ever since I've owned it. Ironically I haven't seen it on since this problem started. Last time I pulled codes it was lean idle mixture.. I think.

First thing that comes to mind is 02.. or maybe not.. I have no idea. I think I'll just swap it over to carbinated tomorrow

Thanks,

Scerb

When's the last time you cleaned the MAF and t'body? Also remember to make sure the TPS isn't out of whack.

Original 02 sensor?

I haven't done crap to it, I'm lazy I'm gonna go ahead and replace the 02. I know a lot have people have had good luck with sparkplugs.com, but is an 02 from a good parts store ok? I've heard some bad things.. I just don't wanna wait for shipping from sparkplugs.com.

Also, this problem is only when engine is warmed up, idles fine when cold. Dunno if that isolates anything or not..

ya, CEL came on on my way home tonight. I'll pull it tomorrow, I'd assume its the lean idle mixture again.. Doesn't the tps not really do anything at idle?? I want a carb

Oh yeah it does. It's part of the feedback loop for the ECU.

Seems to me there's something about how that loop basically works in the tech articles at www.autoshop101.com

TPS- root of all evil.

On the 02 sensor, if the box store has a Denso, go for it.

check the connections on the plug for the tps, clean them up a bit while your waiting on your o2 sensor to be shipped to ya.

so yes, its code 25 - lean fuel mixture.

I bought a new denso 02... $117, ouch. Sparkplugs.com was 90+shipping, but its getting to the point where this is getting hard to drive so I gotta just suckitup and fix it now.

Ya, fix it now.

Go to take old 02 out, nuts rust into pieces, 02 won't come out.

Truck won't idle.

Awesome.
Fun.
I love Toyotas....

have you checked fuel pressure or thought about some trash in your tank? im asking because i had a similar issue and it turned out that i had the line to my charcoal canister disconnected and it was letting moisture get into the tank vent and caused a bunch of rust, the gas i drained out was a nice burnt orange color.... just a thought.....

did you pb blaster it first and then use an o2 sensor socket?
