Hi every one, 1'st post! I am considering trading my '95 montero for a '96 Acura SLX and have a question regarding a 4.3 vortec swap. I searched, but am getting conflicting information regarding the 4l30e tranny. Can someone tell me if it has a 90 degree or 60 degree chevy bolt pattern? I have heard both, and my mechanic buddy SWEARS it will bolt up. I know there is much more to the swap than just this, but I have an '01 4.3l with 17 (yes, seventeen) original miles on it along with the ECU, harness, etc. Thanks in advance, C.J.

Unless GM has changed the bolt pattern on the later-model 4.3's, it would have same pattern as a 90 deg Small Block Chevy V8 (i.e., incompatible with a 60 deg V6 tranny).
The 4L30E has the same bolt pattern as a 60 deg GM FWD V6 (i.e., starter on the driver's side if it were mounted in the vehicle fore-to-aft instead of side-to-side).
It does have a removable bell housing so theoretically you might find that a bell housing from a 90 deg V8 or V6 might bolt up. This would greatly simplify the 'shoehorning' in of a 4.3.
Just a thought, maybe Jerry L. or other swappers can confirm......ed

Thanks Ed, that's pretty much what I was thinking. I told my mechanic he was nuts. It looks like the northstar series of engines and the L47 from an aurora would fit to the stock bellhousing, but a 90 degree won't unless the bellhousing is changed like you said. Thanks again!

Just a thought, maybe Jerry L. or other swappers can confirm......ed THIS IS CORRECT ON THE 4L30 REMOVE ABLE BELL HOUSING , HOW EVER AS FAR AS I KNOW NO OTHER GM TRANNY HAS THE SAME BOLT ON TYPE OF BELL HOUSING , THE 4L30 FRT BELL HOUSING IS ACTUALLY PART OF THE FRT PUMP ASSY , IT ISNT JUST A BELL HOUSING IN THE TRUE SENSE , JERRY

Mad Props to Jerry, You Da Man !!!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> Absolutely! I had no idea that the bellhousing was part of the pump assy. I try to learn something new everyday or else I feel that my day has been wasted. Thanks Jerry!
