Hi All,

I have owned a long body sportage for a couple of years now and have noticed that the torque is almost non-existent until 3500rpm, after that it kicks in very well. This is quite different to other sportages I have driven. Does anyone have any ideas as to the possible cause of this?

Mine is a year 2000 build and everything else I have driven is an earlier model.

Auto or manual tranny?

I have a 2000 auto and what you say is "normal" to me...was like that from day 1...I would have even said 4000 rpm...
If previous year models were different as you say, I would blame it on the computer algorithm...may be for change of rules for emission control....and SOHC were probably better at low RPM but DOHC are designed to peak the torque at a higher RPM.
WHen about to address an uphill, I trig the HOLD button so it revs 4000 and then it keeps with the load; leaving it in 4th would be no good for the nerves.
I had planned to disconnect the knock sensor..and replace it with an equivalent so computer does not go to fail mode...but did not manage to do it yet. Whenever I try, I'll report the results....if any.

? does it slam into gear when you get to 3500rpm's I would think you have a auto trans, how is the fld. and it's color ? is it burnt or low ? it also could be the clutches are worn or a shift solenoid is bad or a valve in the trans is sticking, how long has this been doing this ? or are you talking about you think you don't just have a lot of power until then ?

how long ago were plugs wires and coils changed, and timing belt and tensioners and the tensioner spring ?

Mine is a 95 DOHC with the manual trans and it's about the same. It pulls ok under 3500 RPMs but pulls better over. My Brother had a SOHC with a manual and it didn't feel like it had good torque anywere. I was running the 30" tires and he had the stock 205s and I could still beat him off the line and pull away steadely.

Manual transmission, DOHC, long wheel base. Plugs changed about 5k ago, leads and coils don't think they've been changed but it's always been the same since I bought it with 60K kms on the clock.

get a hi-flow intake and exhaust, it helps a lot with that. leave the cat(s) in place, but replace the muffler with a flowmaster and the airbox with a K&N. and stomp a little harder.

does the K&N filter really make that much difference.

I would second what dave just said on the intake and exhaust.

. I am sure he also means to completely yank the stock air box and put in a cone filter too though, not just a stock replacement filter.
