Getting the Wheeling Fever
I hear that Al Gore is taking time off from making movies so that he can work in his garage on adopting his tour bus to run off of a fondue pot. That might be more in my price range...

If the truck is similar to the Montero, the fuel pump and the gauge sender unit are both mounted towards the top/front of the tank. The sender unit mounts in a separate hole next to the fuel pump, and has a separate gasket. For comparison go here: sooper-sekret linky and look at the '92 Montero FSM for engine, chassis, body. Look at the drawings starting on page 13-97 and compare with what you've got. The drawings show a separate mounting for the sender unit on the driver's side of the fuel pump mounting location.

Yeah, that's quite a bit different than the Max. I don't have easy access through the bed, so I guess I'll just have to rig up some kind of mirror probe and check it out myself with a flashlight when it isn't cold and rainy out...

The mirror didn't help much, but removing the side skirt panel stay gave me a good view of the top of the tank. The fuel guage unit and connector are way back on the tank - the stream of gas is squirting from one of the metal pipes coming out of the Fuel pump assembly toward the front. It looked to lead to the filter so I assume it's the main fuel line.

The sevice manual gives no indication of the distinction between fuel pump assembly, packing, and the two lines leading out from the pump area. As the 'pipe' curls over the side of the tank and heads to the front it attaches to a flexible hose after a few inches. Does the other end just go to the pump or is it part of some of the other pieces in the assembly?

Well, since it's different from the Montero, I can't definitively state, but when I replaced my Raider's fuel pump, the "curved metal tube" goes through the mounting plate, and the fuel pump is then connected to the tube inside the tank via a short length of hose. The metal tube is not replaceable. If it is cracked you'll need to get a new fuel pump bracket. I speak from experience here

If the leak is coming from the connection of the rubber fuel line between the tank and filter, it might be as simple as tightening the connection with a couple of line wrenches, although it sounds like dropping the tank is required to do this. If you do it yourself, remember that the metal pipe fitting is NOT a flare nut (again, voice of experience). You want to disconnect the rubber fuel line at the fuel-filter-side fitting first, which DOES have a flare nut on it, then tighten down the fuel-pump side with a wrench on the fuel pump fitting to keep it stationary.

If your metal tube is the culprit, you'll need to call around to some recyclers and get a replacement. At least, that's what I ended up doing. You'll need the whole bracket because the metal pipe is brazed into the mounting plate and not replaceable. Good luck! I know how frustrating it can be

The leak is definitely from the metal pipe part, about a quarter inch above the disc that bolts to the tank, and the lines leading out are part of the whole assembly. In fact, I've been told Mitsubishi considers the whole assembly, including the pump itself, to be one part. This sucks pretty bad since I just paid 240 bucks for a new pump that didn't include the assembly.

I'm checking out car-part.com, but they only offer a category for 'fuel pump' and the places I've called apparently have a vehicle sitting in their yard with no clue as to the parts' actual presence or conditions.

I did see one good lead - it says "bad pump, good lines". Only it is for a RamD50 with a 2.4L engine. I know D50s use the same parts, but most places seem pretty picky about engine size and drive train specs. The shop manual uses identical drawings of the assembly for 2.4 and 3.0 versions. Would anyone happen to have insight into the compatibility of these?

I think I got mine from msrecycling. Yeah, they sell it as a fuel pump. I just pulled the pump that came with the bracket and installed my brand-new denso one. You can swap your new one over without much trouble. For you, the hardest part will be dropping the tank, I suspect

The D50 pump mentioned above includes the code "FG10800" in the description, different from either the Mitsubishi or dealer stock numbers - any clue to what it means? Google indicates that it is a 'hypothetical protein'.
