Getting the Wheeling Fever
Anyone installed a pyrometer pre-turbo? I am thinking I'll need some new gaskets if I take my turbo out... I tried phoning Rocky Mountain Imports where I've ordered some parts before but his voicemail is full! Anyone know of other good places to order parts like these from? Anyone successfully reused their turbo seals?

they are cheap...I wouldn't even bother trying to re-use the gaskets. I haven't installed a pyrometer yet but its on my to-do list. I installed one on my old car pre-turbo and then found out that auto-meter probes tend to weaken overtime and break off...thus taking out the turbo. As soon as I heard that I pulled it out and moved it after the turbo. it doesn't give you as accurate of a reading but still not bad, and no chance of it going through your turbo.

I'm sure lots of people have never had them break off but I just didn't want the chance for it to happen.

Why would you take the turbo out to install a pyro? Or are you doing something else to it? Best pyro probe is from a heavy truck shop (Peterbilt, Kenworth, etc) All large diesels have them pre-turbo and run for a million miles without breaking. Just drill and tap a hole pre-turbo, the probe is adjustable as to how far it sticks in the hole. Pretty much any guage will work with any probe.
If you are worried about the few shavings that are going to be left in the manifold, then make sure you pull the head off every 2000 miles and clean out any carbon deposits as chunks of that routinely come off and go thru the turbo at full spool. The turbo is barely starting to spin by the time the shavings are blown out by the exhaust.
As soon as my guage gets here from Dakota Digital, thats the route I'm going. This will be #12 pyro I've installed in my trucks this way.

yah thats exactly what I mean, I know people have run them pre-turbo and never had any problems. I will probably end up doing the same.

Well RMI returned my call and the gaskets should arrive next week... Yeah I don't know about the whole shavings through the turbo thing. I think there might be a difference between powdery carbon flakes and chunks of iron. Either way it would be cool to take it all apart and probably easier to drill with it out.

Have you ever got ahold of those "powdery chunks of carbon"?
They happen to be just a tad harder that steel, Carbon is actually added to steel to make it harder. Granted there isn't much room to drill but I was going to do mine from the bottom up. Nothing on mine leaks, so I prefer to leave it alone.

drilling your manifold with the turbo still attached is fine...nothing will happen...when you drill cast Iron, it doesn't come off in filings...its like iron dust. carbon steel has bigger larger shavings.

Need a Spot
One thing you can do is get rid of your EGR and make a small plate where it goes into your manifold ....or one trick i heard was to drill it while ideling and the exhaust pressure will blow the shaving out the hole you drill ...personally i'd take it off to drill
