SO, it occurs to me- now that i have my tranny out of the rodeo, that there is an electronic actuator for my 4wd system. I was planning on going with the dual isuzu t-case set up. But now that i look at it i'm not sure it will work.

Does anyone know how this electonic actuator works? I've not really tried to take it apart yet, but I am pretty sure that it sticks out too far to add another isuzu t-case to the back of it. Not to mention how i'm going to get it to work in conjunction with another case from a late model amegio.

Any ideas at this point??

Without seeing the parts first hand, my GUESS is that you can still make it work. I'm assuming your donor has the e-shift actuator as well? I've not seen a good picture even, but I'm guessing the actuator operates the shift rods from the back, vs the mechanical shifter working them from the front on earlier years.

Is it possible to just remove it and plug the holes on the rear? To shift it you could maybe cut & tap/drill the rods from the front and use a cable shifter setup. This looks like it could work on the older cases... again, not sure on the 98+ ones.

Then there's always the possibility of replacing the front t-case housing/back of tranny piece with an earlier one with the mechanical t-case shifter in it, but you'd basically be swapping your tranny guts into a new housing doing so...

It's gonna be hard to figure out unless Jerry pipes in or you start taking things apart and see what swaps w/ what.

Had a thought and confirmed it with this.

The 2nd gens still have a mechanical t-case lever for hi/low range. That means the shift motor is only used for 2wd/4wd selection. Since you're cutting the front output off.... just remove the actuator and plug the holes. Leave the 2/4 shift rod in 4wd. No issues.

If you get a SOTF donor, plug your harness into the rear case and the push-button, lights, etc should still work.

I would just get the earlier model tcase. makes things a lot simpler. I may even have some laying around. I will take a look for ya Trav.

I am going to try to take the actuator off and lock it in 4wd. Assumeing that the wireing harness is the same (something easily identified) I should be able to just extend the wires and plug it in. I know it sounds too simple, but there are plenty of other complicated things to do on this project too.... I'll try to get this done over the next day or two. Will let you guys now the outcome.

Ok, so i took it apart and it is totaly gear driven, no chains. Just in case you were wondering. I am assuming that the bearings inside are pressed on and then have a snap ring on the outside. The more i look at it the more i reaize that it I am going to have to take quite a bit of the gears out in order to remove the 4wd parts. I would post a few pictures, but i don't have anywere to host them atm. grrr... i am going to be hard pressed to have this finished by moab. But i'm having fun, and afterall isn't that what this is about?

Trav, I was just thinking about it and I found a spare manual tcase already hacked and welded back up for the manual t case on the dual case set up. It is already machined and ready to go. I also have most the stock gears for it as well. I am fairly sure it is the same as yours gear wise and what not. If you come to a bind let me know and I can send them your way.
