Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey all, I'm ready to fire up my rebuilt motor and just realized that the fuel in the tank is a year old.
It was 3/4 full and it still seems to smell ok. The question is, is it going to be usable. Otherwise I have some 15 gallons of gas to get rid of and that would suck.
Thanks for any insight!

If that were me, I'd drain that fuel, run it through a simple filter, and use it in little bits (gallon, half-gallon at a time) mixed into tankfuls in one of my other vehicles or in my lawn mower. But that's just me. I'm thinking my carbed 2.6 wouldn't like it.

I'd run it unless it didn't start. You'll likely get crappy fuel economy out of it, but who cares? You probably only paid $2.50 a gallon for it last year.

If you aren't sure how the engine runs after the rebuild, I'd drain it and run a tank of new, clean fuel. Then pour it back in and burn it.

Or do what Cap'n Crunch said. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I'd probably dump a can or two of injector cleaner in there with it to help keep it from gumming stuff up. Worst would probably be that you clog up either the fuel filter or the fuel pickup sock in the tank, or the inlet screen on the pump. None of those are all that hard to get at in the worst case. $60 worth of fuel at replacement cost.

Wouldnt it just be a waste of money ,since it needs to be mixed in on a empty tank. It would just be a waste of money because it wouldnt work.I say just dump it and refill,Replacing a fuel filter and fuel pump is going to cost money especally if it clogges the injectors .

I say just dump it

Would that be in the same spot I'd dump all my plastic waste, oil, and other chemicals, or should I choose a separate dump spot out in the wetlands? [Linked Image]

My Monty sat for 8 months after the first blown head and ran fine with the old gas. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

We used to have old cars come into the shop that hadn't run for a year or more. We never put new gas in the tank before starting. I can only thnk of one that it became a problem on, and that was because they'd left the gas cap off and all the fuel evaporated. The only thing that kept it from starting was the total lack of fuel.

My old red D-50 sat for a couple of years before I put the turbo motor in. That stuff required about 10 cans of injector cleaner and about a pint of acetone to clear out the filter/sock/pump/injectors. Smelled like varnish. Gummed stuff up like tar. No bad smell, I'd just use it. I'd probably put whatever fresh gas it would hold in on top of it to dilute it some.

Didn't you guys ever just rock the truck to mix the fuel? That's how you get a "water in the gas" to fire off...
