Getting the Wheeling Fever
so the other day i was driving my pickup in 4wd and i noticed that when i turn i hear a loud clunk coming from the right side. it feels like its in the tires and, considering that it has 386,000 on the clock, im thinking the cv joints are going out. is there any way to check and see if they are indeed bad without tearing it apart? none of the boots are torn, but from a stop i hear a slight thump thump thump that gets faster as i pick up speed. i have a 91 v6

Try lifting the front tires in the air and see if you can duplicate the noise by spinning the tires.

Do you have any vibration at hwy. speed? That is another good indicator that your CV's are going. You might as well plan on replacing them, 386k is a good run on almost any component of your truck, especially the drivetrain. Do both sides, you'll have all the tools out and it's a pain so you might as well get it over with. I did a Nissan, first side took an hour, 2nd side 15 minutes. Once you are warmed up and know what to do it's easy.

yeah at highway speeds i can feel the vibrations in my gas pedal. Im sure i can do it no problem but i hear that you have to be careful to get the cone washers out. whats the best way to get these out?
