Newb here wondering if that would work......?? Local here has a 86 Montero for sale with a blown engine and I have a friend with a carbuerated Ford 2.3l out of an 80's Mustang. I was just wondering if it would be possible to mate the 2.3 to the KM145 transmission. If I remember correctly some of the Bronco II and Rangers had a Mitsu 5spd known as the FM145.

Different bell housing, so it wouldn't be a direct swap. More then likely, it's just blown the cyl. head gasket or cracked the head. The bottom ends on the 2.6L are pretty stout.

toddstidham1-Are you sure about the bellhousing? I took a 2.3l diesel from an '86 Ranger and put in my 89 D50. Both 5 spds, the wrecker I got it from, told me another fellow swapped a "85 2.3 diesel into a '86 2.3 gasser Ranger. All kept orig. trannys.
Long way around it, but if you add it all up, it should fit. But, I've been wrong before...LOTS!

Different bellhousings on the earlier Mitsus. Maybe up through 85 should bolt up.

Yes the Broncos used a Mitsubishi Transmission that has a removable bell. Not sure which engines it was behind.
The diesel in the Ranger is a Mitsubishi engine so it should look like a Mitsubishi.

To install a Ford 2.3 in a Montero, used the trans from a Bronco. I am not sure what the output spline is on that trans as far as mating to the transfer case so it might take a bit of mix and match to get it all together.

For a 2.3L gas engine, yes...different bell. The 2.3L Diesel engine is a mitsubishi engine and has the 2.6L bell housing.

Need a Spot
I just recently put a 2.5l (2.3 stroked) in a 86 montero. I used to race pro-4's here in OK and had one around. I work at a machine shop and could build what ever I needed. I had to build an adapter plate to match up the block & bell housing, the starter is on the wrong side. Tuff but can be done.

It would have been much easier to use the Ford bellhousing and transmission case that bolts into a Montero.

thanks for the information. I may take a look at the Montero later this week and try to see exactly what is wrong with it.
