Well I am new to this site and new to mitsubishi diesels as well. I've been running dodge cummins for years but with the price of fuel I have been looking for a smaller more fuel efficient truck. I picked 2 dodge d50's with the 4d55. One was a crank no start the other has internal problems. So I figred I would tackle the crank but no start first. The injection pump was bad took it off and noticed the ballance shafts were froze up. I decided to build the engine, pulled it out, took the head off. Two cracks between the injector port and the exhaust valve on 2 and 3.And found water in the oil. I can't seem to find a head ANYwhere in the U.S.I had never seen an import turbo diesel this old that was actually sold in the U.S. let alone find parts for one. Its a neat little truck and would love to get it running so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Body Damage is Cool
the 4D56 head bolts on and from what I hear is quite an upgrade for the 4D55. you can probably get one of these overseas used (ie...EBAY UK) if you are willing to wait. or talk to a japanese engine importer and see what he can find.

Torquemonster is right, the 4d56 is a direct bolt on and the head has a better design. Be careful not to get a head from china, or any 4d55/4d56 parts for that matter, I have only heard horror stories. Also make sure you get the age apropriate head for the vehicle. For example you don't want the head for the common rail 4d56.

You say to not to get a head from china? Its a chinese engine isnt it or is it japanese? If its chinese I fugred that would be the place to get one. I do a seach online for it and thats pretty much all that I come up.I have to leave an inquiry and they will get back with me but all the business adressess are in china. Does any one know of another place besides china to get a head? I also heard of a cast iron replacement but no luck finding one of those either. I would like to find somewhere that isnt goint to tear me a new one in shipping as well. Ive also heard talk of the valves being recesed or not. Well my valves a pretty much flush with the deck of the head when they are closed, there is no combustion chamber like on a 350 chevy.

Man, major brain fart. I have no idea why I was thinking mitsubishi was chinese. I work on mitsu's all the time and see the engine tag stareing right back at me with big letters JAPAN. Its been a long week.
