the front wheel lites come on and off at random on my 96 montero,it now flashes pretty much all the time.I tried moving the stick back an forth,i tried looking at all the old post but found nothing. this problem would appear to be electrical, i would go into the store and get back in and the flashing front lites are gone leaving just the green rear lites on solid, please help.

what I have found to be the problem most of the time with this is the two little solenoid valves that operate the free-wheeling clutch actuator on the front axle. over many years they either go bad or get sticky or dirt in the moving valve part. they are located on the passenger side in the engine compartment on the top of the fender well. there should be one with a blue dot and the other with a yellow dot. if you are good at taking things apart, you can unbolt them and disconnect them and spray some cleaner through them hook the plugs back up and work them back and forth and try to clean them out, sometimes they seem to get sticky over the years. if that doesn't help, you may need to replace them. the actuator works on a vacuum system. I am pretty sure that if my memory serves me well, the yellow dot is for keeping it in 2wd and the blue dot assists at putting it in 4wd. your yellow dot solenoid is probably the culprit. keep in mind, that actuator on the front axle is already spring loaded, so at rest without vacuum, it always wants to be in 4wd mode (free wheeling clutch activated). the only thing that keeps the front axle disengauged (2wd) is the vacuum through that yellow dot actuator. when you put the truck in 4wd, it basically takes vacuum away from the yellow dotted line and applies vacuum to the blue dotted line to 'assist' in locking in the front axle free wheeling clutch. now even without the blue dotted line working, the spring load of the actuator would eventually put in 4wd, but the blue dotted line helps this process as it needs more force to go into 4wd than to come out of 4wd. i hope this helps and if I confused you let me know.

Mine blinks all the time! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> I just left it as is cause I already know its the 4wheel drive ECU. My truck engages and disengages just fine, it just blinks at me <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

How much is one of those things while on the subject <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" />

Chris, find out if it is disenaging or not. Plus, I have a huge article from the Outerlimits board, was very very helpful. Cant seem to find it right now. Someone might chime in with the link

best of luck,
Angelo

Search this site, not mitsubishilinks.com. Go up to the top of this page & click on 'search' right next to 'index'. The search function is a bit touchy, but read the instructions & play with it a little bit & you'll find what you're looking for.

I bet there is a vacuum leak somewhere in the yellow line that goes to your front axle, at higher engine speeds there is less vacuum and it could cause your free wheeling clutch to 'flutter' on the highway.

angelo: I am not so sure it would be your ecu. if you can find the wire that is going to your front axle, try unplugging it and see if the blinking changes. if not, then try grounding the wire that goes up into the truck, see if that changes the blinking.

Mine WAS blinking when I first got my car

I found this website very helpful in fixing the problem, my faulty part was the solenoids one was bad.

here is the web site:
http://4wd.blogeasy.com/

and as a temporary fix to the blinking light I re-arranged the vacuum lines "some how" I don't remember exactly, to only send vacuum to the front diff. in this case I cant engage 4X4 by any how other that replacing the right lines to their origenal positions.

anyway my blinking issue stoped after I replaced the two soleniod valves
