Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi all, starting an off-shoot thread to see if I can get some help working out my wiring woes. For those that haven't kept up to speed, I'm transplanting a '95 Bighorn 4JG2 and A/T into my '91 Trooper. Everything is in, but I'm struggling with the wiring for the Auto Trans (4L30-E).

Where I'm at is:
I have 3 plugs on my transmission that lead to various components on the tranny (selector switch, vss, etc).
I have 4 plugs that lead to various components on the Engine (glow plugs, alt, oil sensors, etc).
Lastly, I have the PCM/TCM that is the brain for the transmission.

The wires that go directly between the components and the PCM/TCM are easy. The tough ones are the wires that lead from the PCM to who knows where. I'm stuck identifying where those wires go, as well as the unknown wires from the engine and transmission connectors. My hope is that someone here has enough experience to help me make sense of this (Alternately, does anyone have a manual transmission that will mount to my 4JG2 smile

Below I have a spread sheet and 8 text files with my mapping of the wires I have. The text files are the same as the 8 tabs in the spread sheet. The PCM is my biggest concern at this point, '??' indicates the wires I don't know what to do with. Is there anyone that can help out?

PAUL ARE YOU CERTAIN THAT THE TRANS IS A 4L30 GM, I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT ALL THE DSL CAME WITH THE AISAN WARNER, FROM THE PIXS I HAVE SEEN THAT IS AN AISAN TRANS, AND IS ABOUT AS BULLET PROOF AS THEY COME, A LITTLE MORE WORK INVLOVED WITH THE WIRING , BUT WELL WORTH THE EFFORT , THE 4L30 HAS ONE SMALL OIL PAN AT THE FRT OF THE TRANS AND A LARGE FLAT PAN ON THE MAIN BODY, THE AISAN HAS A VERY LARGE FRT PAN AND A SMALL SQUARE LOOKING PAN AT THE REAR UNLESS IT HAPPENS TO HAVE THE MANUAL TRANS FER TYP CASE LIKE THE MANUAL TRANNYS JERRY

Thanks for catching that Jerry, I just crawled under the trooper and looked at the tag on the transmission, it is an Aisin 30-40LE not the 4L30. That might just explain why my wiring doesn't match the diagarams I have, as they are all for the 4L30. I'll start searching for wiring diagrams for the Aisin and see what happens. Unfortunately, that transmission isn't listed in anything I have currently.

I appreciate the help. If anyone else can add any info on the wires, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Paul

Hey Jerry or anyone else, do you have a line on wiring info for the Isuzu AW340E? I've been searching and haven't been able to find anything useful yet. I see that many Toyotas have the AW340E, but their wiring doesn't match up to mine. Seems their computers have more input wires than the 24 pin setup I have. The colors don't match up either. Same story for the Jeep AW4 which seems to be a variant of the same transmission.

I see that some of the US Isuzus came with the 340's, but I haven't been able to find anything for them either.

If I could just figure out what to connect my computer wires to (or are not necessary) then I'd be set. The rest of the 'loose' transmission/engine wires I could sort out pretty easy.

Thanks,
Paul

Here is another link I had sitting around, it may help out if you do not already have it.

heh, I was looking through that one yesterday as well. Couldn't seem to find the details I need. Thanks for posting that.

I spent most of last night searching to no avail...

Addendum: Does anyone here know much about the Aisin 30-40LE(A340E/F)? I'm curious if I could abandon the Isuzu electrical system and use a Toyota or Jeep one instead. I only need it to control the shifting of the transmission. The only flaw with that plan I can think is the TPS and Coolant temp on my motor could have different inputs than the Toy/Jeep computer would need). Just grasping for options here...

Paul

Paul - I know you probably need information on the transmission wiring more than on the engine, but I can supply what I've decoded for the 4JB1. Based on my experience, I'd guess that most will match between what I've got and the 4JG2 (if the gas truck colors match the diesel wires, diesel-to-diesel should be a snap!).

I will dig my notes up tomorrow and post the colors if you'd like. School is finally out, so I have some time on my hands.

Hi Adrian, thanks for the offer. I have the engine wires down from the manuals I have. I'm actually just about to to the point where I'm ready to start it up. Just trying to get the transmission sorted first. I have one issue with the alternator, I'll be posting a question on that before too long, but other than that I think it's all set. If I could just get the transmission sorted, I'd be just about ready to roll.

Hey Jerry, any chance you might have some wiring info on this transmission? I'm thinking you might be my last hope on this.

As a side note to that, any ideas on the longevity loss if I just scrap the electronics and use this as a manually operated automatic?

Paul

HI PAUL I HAVE THE DIAGRAMS FOR THE 89-91 AW30 80 LE WHICH I THINK IS VERY SIMILIAR TO THE ONE YOU HAVE , BE GLAD TO SEND YOU WHAT I HAVE, DRIVE IT MANUALLY WONT HURT ANYTHING EXCEPT YOU WILL LOOSE 2ND GEAR AND THE CONVERTOR WILL NOT LOCKUP, THERE IS A N EASIER SOLUTION,, GO ON PLANET ISUZU .COM AND SEARCH AROUND A LITTLE BIT AND LOOK FOR POST FROM TAD ON TITLED TRANS SWAP HAS BEGUN, TAD USE THE 4CYL VERSION IN HIS 94 TROOPER WITH A SPECIAL BELLHOUSING I LOCATED FORHIM ALLSO DAN HOLTON ON THIS SITE DID THE SAME THING WITH A 3800 BUICK WITH THE SAME HOUSING AND THE 4CYL TRANS I THINK, THERE IS A STAND ALONE SIMPLE CONTROLLER THAT WILL LET YOU SHIFT THE TRANS UP AND DOWN WITH JUST A COUPLE OF MOMENTARY CONTACT SW,S AND THAT THING SHIFTS GREAT , AFTER ABOTU 10 MIN DRIVIGN SHIFTING BECOMES SECOND NATURE, AND I THINK IT CAN BE MODIFIED TO SHIFT AUTOMATICALLY JERY

Hi Jerry, thanks for the suggestion. Please do send the wiring info you have to plammer (at) live.com. I found the thread you refer to by Tad. Looks like he is using a Toyota unit in his setup which might be an option, but would require me to get rid of my Isuzu electrics. I'm unsure if using the Toyota elctrics would work with my Isuzu unit. I'm searching to find out if that is truely an option, just not sure yet.

My first choice would be to just use the Isuzu stuff I have. Second choce would be to go to Toyota electrics if that would work.

I've contacted Brett at awshifting. He has said that his controller would work with my setup, but we'd still have to get my transmission computer working first, so that brings me back to square one. Please let me know if I'm missing something, I feel like I'm searching in the dark at this point. Probably answers all around me, I just can't see them yet.

Paul
