Vehicle: 1993 Grand Cherokee 8.5" lift. Full Time 4wd. 318cid., 33" tires,

I am having an issue with a noise when I let off the gas. When I barely touch the gas it goes away. I feel no unusual vibrations. I removed the front shaft and drove it around, no change. I then removed the rear(after installing the front <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />) and drove it around and no more noise. I do not think that I have a slip yoke eliminator. I was wondering do you all think this could be coming from something internally in the transfer case, or coming from the rear end? Either way it has to have some sort of preload on it (i.e. letting off the gas) to make the noise. It almost sounds like a loud siren. Thinking of just installing a rear locker and see what happens since I want one anyway.

Replace the rear U-joints.. Then see if the noise went away.

Maybe I will try that tomorrow. The caps I could get off without tearing into the shaft I threw some grease in. The others felt really good. But, they are cheap enough to try and could probably be old enough to need replacing anyway.

If you don't have a SYE, how did you keep the fluid in your TX case when you pulled the rear drive shaft?

I m not sure on Grand Cherokees, but on a regular Cherokee with that amount of lift a SYE is required to avoid bad vibrations.

Just curious -- why do you have 8-1/2 inches of lift for only 33" tires? You could surely get by with less lift, thus less driveline angle, thus longer lasting U-joints.

I didn't. I would say 1/4 quart leaked out and got all over my undercarriage. I did borrow a plug that a local driveshaft manufacturer had made but didnt install it.

I was runnig 35's on this Jeep but with extreme articulation it would rub and I just thought they looked crammed in there. I put the 33's on mainly because I had a new set off my Montero that exploded.

If it sounds like the whine from a old school bus's drivetrain it's probably the rear diff bearings.

Need a Spot
Hey Tycer, I'm not sure if it would be the same problem or not, but yours is the first explanation I've hear of the "exact" problem I have been experiencing. I am not having any "problems" with my 2003 Jeep Liberty Ltd., aside from the loud "whining" noise when I coast in drive (automtatic) from about 50 mph on down. If I touch the gas, the sound goes away immediately - it's only when coasting. The pitch changes w/ the speed, but is always there. It always had this sound, but is louder as it gets older - now 80,000 miles. Of course, when it was under warranty, I was told "nothing sounds abnormal", but I've never heard this sound from another Jeep, 4-wheel drive or not. Did you fix your problem? Thanks.

The noise is kind of still there. Since it has gotten colder the noise has seemed to go away for the most part. It seems now that the noise comes more from the front than the rear which is leading me more to the transfer case as the source of the noise. Oh well, going to put it up for sale as I have only put 3k miles on it since I bought it and never went to Moab as intended.

I love it - great description. I get that one, it is perfect.
