I believe that the '90 has longer leaf springs so the mounts would be farther apart. Other than that it should work.

The 89+ uses wider leaf springs, any other differences would be minute.
I would personally go with a nice unmolested frame over a patched up one...

Pickup I assume?

The front bumper mounts are different (side of frame vs. front of frame on the '86). Body mounts are a different style and not sure if they are in the same position, they are likely close, assuming the same cab/bed style between the two years. And as noted, the '90 rear leaf springs are about 5" longer than the '88 leaves, spring hangers are relocated, but use the '90 springs and you are good to go.

I'm not familiar with the '90 p/u frame. Did Toyota make it less rust prone? Is it still a fully boxed frame? -- Matt

Frame is still boxed like the earlier ones. I think they have something different as far as rust prevention goes. I know the smell while welding on the later model frames is different than on my '85.

All i know, is the 95.5-00 taco's rust way worse than 1st gen 4runners... which is pretty sad since theyre 10 years older, and 1st gen 4runners werent known for not rusting.... (btw my 99 4runner just has surface rust on it, with 9 years of salt to boot)

The '90s frames seem to rust out in the same places though.

some people use the 2wd frame as replacement. the front has a better arch. you would still have to do a SOA conversion

I just noticed , from reading the 4x4wire Toyota FAQ, that there are wheelbase differences too. The long wheelbase versions of the third generation pickups are 10" longer, 112" vs. 122" between the second and third generation pickups. It looks like the short models stayed the same at 102". -- Matt
