I am looking at buying another Trooper and the reviews on the 1999 that I read online brought up one major issue, replacing the engine after 60K miles. Also mentioned it used oil quickly. Can anyone give me some tips on this model? What should I keep a lookout for? Thanks

Some 99-01 engines use oil, some don't. Some have reported success with keeping the piston oil rings (the culprit) clean with a high detergent oil such as Rotella synthetic. Keeping the EGR system clean is important, too.
In 02 I believe Isuzu fixed the ring design, engines with this newer design can be identified by the screw-in PCV valve, whereas the older style has a push-in valve. Perhaps your replacement engine has the newer design?

I haven't bought it yet. I just took it for a test drive. Does handle way different from my 91 Trooper to be sure. I am trying to figure out how to determine if this one has its original engine. It has 108K miles, and I think it had one owner, was bought new here in Idaho and stayed here. Is there a way to know if the engine was replaced? I appreciate you answering. Great "Firefly" quote by the way.

Not that I can think of...I don't think engines have VIN numbers on them.
My old 99 Trooper didn't burn any oil, but only had 65K when it got wrecked.

buy it. Its loads better than the 1st Gens. Mine burns 1 qt every 2-3K miles. Just check it often. Real often. Every refuel often.

Good advice, thanks. I also found out more about its history, (love small towns). So I am confident it has original engine. Just need to sawzall my garage a little to make it fit!

I think you should pass. Look for 02 or at least 01 & upper trim level.
99 has definite issues with oil consumption - mine started @ 65k+. Ditto for Intake Manifold Gasket, did it 2x.
If you decide to take a chance, make sure that the timing belt/water pump has been serviced around 75k. Also make sure that the tranny (filter/fluid or at least fluid) has been changed regularly. I would also check the oil level every gas fillup.
Good Luck.
