Need a Spot
My 2000 Sporty A/C belt just broke and it's gotten hot enough here and I gotta fix it real soon.

I found it strange to see that tensioner pulley with only one side on it. Is mine faulty or is it just supposed to only have one side open (not like the usual V-belt idler pulley I've seen in the past.

I'm about to give it a try and I hope I don't need any parts other than the belt..

Also do everyone's Sportage belts squeek like mine? Maybe it's that weird idler causing the noise... I've tried everything I can think of to stop all the belt noise.

Edited by Patman after further exploration:

Man ! I discovered that I had been running a bad tensioner for the 35000 miles (since I bought the KIA) It only had one side on it and I can see where the other side of the "V" used to be. It is liely the cause of the noisey belts I mentioned above. I have had great reliability with this little Sportage and it looks like this is no big deal at all. (except that it's Saturday evening and I DO need a part that I'll likely have to get from the dealer, but oh well. Next servicie will be the plugs and the timing belt I'm sittin' on 70K miles and it's probabably about time for that stuff. I have the printed out copy of the steps necessary for plugs thanks to this great web forum.

Thanks, Axeman, (and all you other enthusiasts.)

Any comments are welcome. Thanks

Pat

I have one that looks like this: [Linked Image]
I could ship it (pulley and tensioner, not cast bracket unless you need it) to you Monday if you're getting overheated!!!

It has 60,000 miles on it.

PM me if you're interested.

the squeeky belt is most likely the P/S belt, another Axeman fix make the belt just tight enough that you can not pull the P/S belt with your hand, no need to have it bone breaking tight, I would start with a new belt.

You can also get some spray on belt cleaner that might help. What it does is clean the belt enough for it to grab a little better.

Or an old school trick is to get a bar of Ivory soap (must be Ivory because it's 99.44 percent pure) and with the engine running rub it on both sides of the belt. It cleans the belt just like the spray on belt cleaner and allows it to grip a little better.
