 Brake warning light stays on, then goes off then comes on again...?

The brake warning light in my 1990 Pajero LWB auto stays on in the morning after I start up and drive off. It's not the handbrake because if I leave the handbrake off overnight, the light is still on when starting up in the morning. I took the sensor wire off the brake booster, and earthed it but that makes no difference. When I take the low level sensor connection off the master cylinder the light goes out, and comes on again when I connect it up again. The master cylinder is full of fluid. During stop start driving during the day the warning light goes off, but sometimes comes on again if I brake. Any Ideas anyone? I've checked the booster in the normal way and it seems fine. is the float in the reservoir stuck?

If you can't find anything wrong with the fluid level, fluid reservoir switch or parking brake switch, check the alternator.

I don't think so, but I'll check in the morning. Thanks, Bergie On POC(uk) this has popped up an a number of occasions, usually the float switch but these are sensative to small drops in fluid level & just adding a small amount of fluid will solve the problem. I'll go with fluid level, as you say that the light goes off during stop/start driving which will heat-up the fluid & it expands a little. is the float in the reservoir stuck? Mine sticks sometime also and it's been the float in the reservoir. I think I need to clean the brake fluid system as it look dirty.

After startup this morning I poked the float in the master cylinder and the brake warning light went out. DUHHH! Why didn't I think of that. Thanks everyone. Bergie.

You take off the lid on the master cylinder and poke your finger down in the reservoir. All there is too it.

You take off the lid on the master cylinder and poke your finger down in the reservoir. All there is too it. What "hazy-daze" said except, poke your finger on the float, in the reservoir. Just dislodge it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
