Actually, I had no local interest in it, so I decided to keep it and drive it for the winter, saving the newer one, which has less ground clearance anyway. A little bit of body work, a new windshield, and it should pass yearly safety inspection with no problem.

After driving this truck for a few months, I can report that it works well. Runs quiet, and oddly fuel mileage is about the same as the high-mileage engine in the other truck. Seems to have better low-end grunt (tho not by a lot), and it doesn't leak or burn any oil. The other one has almost 350,000 miles, so I suppose it's allowed to use a little

Another month and a half, and it will be time to park it for the winter. I still like the older truck, stack and all. I guess it's kind of like an old friend....that I made .

Time is almost here to park the 1994. I have done some work to the older one, and with a little more will be on the road soon. This will give me time in the winter to fix those little annoying problems that aren't worth tearing things all apart for when you're driving your truck day-to-day.
I think I'm going to wire-in the second relay and resistor on a timer on the 1991. That should make it start/run better in the cold weather. Still gonna have to manually hold the glow for 3 seconds, but the second relay will keep juice to the plugs through the resistor for a while longer to help keep them hot. What fun.
The 1994 used about 1/2 liter in 5000kms. Not even a consideration. The other one uses a liter every 1500kms or so...well, leaks some and burns some.
My neibour told me about a Toyota diesel engine and transmission laying around that I could have if I wanted it....wonder if it's seized, or any good at all....

Well, it's been a little bit, and this forum is quiet anyway.

I started making a oil reservoir for the power steering, as the one I cobbled together was having problems with the supply line from the tank to the pump. The line would kink, mainly because it has to do a tight S, something it doesn't want to do. The new tank will have a spigot facing in a more suitable angle. It won't hold a lot of oil, but I actually hooked up the cooler for the power steering, so there is more fluid in that. The old truck has worked for 6 years now without a cooler, so with one and a small tank should be fine. If not, I'll make something else. These are good little "break time" projects for me to do at work, during our 2) 15 minute breaks every day (I can't just sit during the breaks or I get lazy, so I do little fixes, etc.)
Right now it's -19C outside, and they are calling for winds tomorrow, so it's got a windchill of -38C. Excellent breaktime projects, especially since my garage isn't heated.

I have to figure out where the coolant leak is also, another more required repair for the S10. Not a major leak, but after a long highway drive, it is puddled on the intake manifold. I think it may be the thermostat housing gasket, but that will have to wait for at least above freezing to tackle that one.

I can get the Toyota motor, with the 5 speed and transfer case, for $200. I have no need for it now, however, you never know.....

I have made one power steering reservoir, but after trying it out, it wasn't going to work out very well as I didn't baffle it internally, and the return oil was shooting at my fill cap, and oozing out, so back to the shop it went. I added a second half to the side of it and baffled it inside, and voila! it works.
Sadly, it has been a long, cold winter so my work on the truck has been limited and slow. I haven't addressed the coolant leak yet, but it is another issue I am going to deal with soon. I am looking forward to driving it again, as I haven't driven it since November.

I also sold the old 1991 Sonoma that I converted to a diesel. The body was getting tired, and the motor was also showing it's many miles, so I ended up buying a 1986 S10 4cyl gas automatic. This thing is in really nice shape (for around here), and was kept up. However, it is rated for 92hp, and it is slower than the diesel on hills. Not by much, but it is slower. Perhaps someday I will convert this one too, if I can find another diesel S10 truck sitting around somewhere, waiting just for me.....

Body Damage is Cool
I don't check in here at the Diesel forum too often but I always love these projects you guys do. These trucks of yours sound great, especially the gas (fuel) mileage!

Thanks, lttlbddy.
My project was quite a bit of work, but it pales in comparison to the craftsmanship some of the guys have done here. Still, it does what I wanted, and it's different. I like the new character it has given a otherwise regular truck, and there are even a (very) few that actually notice that it is a diesel. I look forward to driving it again, which should be in a couple of weeks or so. We are having a long, drawn-out winter here this year.

I finally had a chance to check out my coolant leak, and lucky me it was only a loose hose clamp, or rather a not-tight-enough hose clamp. Two of them actually. Thanks to the power of modern technology (cooling system tester ), I was able to find and fix the leaks without burning myself, or even starting the engine! It was one of those glad problems...glad the problem was simple. I could never tell where it was coming from because the fan blew the drips all over everything, so pinpointing it when running just wasn't happening. I thought I had checked all the clamps, but it was the big one on the water pump, and I had the clamp turned where it was hard to get at. Anyway, it's fixed.
A few more little repairs later (like fixing the cruise control for example), and the only thing left is to install the miserable rear speakers in the C-pillar. GM liked to use the strange 4X10 speakers in some of their vehicles, and this is one of them. They are hard to find around here now, but Kenwood still makes them, so finding a cheaper replacement didn't happen. Taking half the truck apart to get at them is the miserable part. Oh well. It'll all be good when finished.
It's been a few months since I last had it on the road (Nov I think), so I'm a bit anxious to drive it again. I'll fill ya in on how that turns out.

Well, it turns out that I STILL had a leak at the same place, which was the thermostat cover. It only leaked any amount when I drove it on the highway. I was a bit afraid to try removing the cover bolts because they were very tight in there, but I did manage to get them out, thanks to someone using copper anti-seize on the threads at some point. I just installed a new gasket after cleaning up the aluminum, and a bit of sealant with that gasket for good measure....no more leaks. Yay.
The speakers sound decent, which is good because they were a pain to install. At least they all work.
Seems to be working better than it did last year, especially after a longer drive. It's a heavy truck compared to the Pup, so considering that I guess it does well. Once in a while I'll get a strange look from someone who realizes there is a diesel in there and probably shouldn't be.
