Hey all, the other day I let my friend's wife borrow my truck to pick up some dirt, and while she was driving down the road the truck started smoking from under the hood. She pulled over and long story short, when I got the truck back to my house and got a good look under the hood, the positive cable from the starter to the battery was fried, as well as the negative from the terminal to the body. After doing some research it seems like I'm missing a ground-shouldn't I have a negative to the engine block and a negative to the body?
The cable from the positive to the fuse box looks OK, and the other wires leading to the starter seem OK too so I'll start with replacing the positive and negatives, and probably making some new grounds. Any suggestions or ideas on what might have caused this in the first place?

No non-conductive covers on the battery terminals and/or no battery hold down. How's yours? Glad she pulled it over quick!

The other ground cable you'd have would be from the pax lower front corner of the block to ground, usually the motor mount. There's also a pigtail ground on the firewall to the rear of the block on the exhaust side.

Give that starter cable a GOOD VISUAL inspection before you trust it again. Last, I'd unbolt the fuse block and turn it over to inspect for wire chaffing; it happens.

were you useing the stock battery hold downs? my guess is she turned, knocked battery off, and hit frame or metal and then it just went to hell from there

The battery is still solid on the mount, I think maybe the cable had a break somewhere and sparked off the frame or body. When I get the cables off I'll see if I can tell.

I'm still perplexed by the lack of a ground from the battery to the engine block.
I don't see how it would even start w/o that, let alone, run. You must have a fabulous contact between the engine and frame/body. Perhaps that's what you lost, and started the fire... but I don't see how that one would just come off. Mine is (was) helt on with a loop, bolt going through it on the motor mount.
is that bolt still there?

I replaced the cables that were there today, just so I can check what's going on and to see if I'm missing anything here's the cables and contacts I have from the battery-
Battery + to starter
Battery + to fuse box
Battery - to body
If I'm missing a Battery - to engine block, can anybody post a picture or give a description of what I'm missing so I can get it right? Thanks a lot!

UPDATE-I just now happened to drop a wrench so it was touching the + and the battery hold down at the same time-holy crap it was a shower of sparks and the wrench spot-welded itself to the battery hold-down before I could knock it off with a piece of plastic. Upon closer inspection the battery hold-down is melted into the top of the battery-looks like I'm in for a new battery and hold-down! That was a fun experience.......

Sounds like you need a new wrench too

Update-I replaced the cables, battery, and terminals-now I get the solenoid click and whine and nothing from the starter. Maybe the starter got fried in the process? Looks like I'm replacing the starter tomorrow!

Yes, it probably got fried.

On replacing the starter, personally I would find a Denso starter from a junkyard. Parts store starters are junk.
