Blown head gasket on a 1986 22RE 4Runner. Just sold it to this kid and he calls me today and says the head gasket is gone....#4 cylinder full of coolant. I don't get it...the only issues I ever had was what I thought was a sticking thermostat 2/3 times. It ran great with the exception of some idle oscillation. He said he drove 3.5 hours with no symptoms only to have the head gasket blow a couple of days later???? Any help appreciated....I just need to know if it was bad when I sold it...I don't want to screw this kid over, but I dont want to be taken for a ride either...

Believe it or not, the surging idle is a sign of low coolant on the 22re's. So I'm guessing it was low on coolant, and the guy overheated and blew the head gasket.

Before I sold him the rig, I checked the coolant which was a little low and I added a little. I figured it was from the leak I had at the heater pipe connection. So the radiator was full when he left. Is it a possible senario that the thermostat became stuck closed and caused the engine to overheat and blow the head gasket? Or, can a head gasket slowly degrade and leak for months and then suddenly blow??
Thanks again.

May have been leaking all along, a cylinder->cooling passage leak. Had that happen on my '85, would only act up in hotter weather and only under high power situations like climbing long highway grades. Cylinder pressure would force into the cooling system, over pressuring it and finally causing it to overflow the overflow bottle. Only happened while driving, so you could never see the leak. But once the coolant dropped enough, the engine would start to get hot.

The headgasket was shot and the block deck was corroded on the Chili's motor when I bought it. Only it didn't leak yet.
It did 2K miles later though.
Pressure testing the cooling system is always a good idea when buying a truck. I didn't. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" />
Everything I've learned has been the result of a mistake. Sometimes someone else's, but it seems, usually mine.
Ah is reeel smart now. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> Gonna get smarter cuz I ain't done making mistakes.

I'm feeling you, not wanting to take the kid and all but....buyer beware does apply here. I'm assuming that you let the kid all you knew about the rig so you've done all you could do. Your not obligated by law to help him, but that is up to you. Good Luck

i would tell him so sad to bad, all privete party sales unless otherwise stated are as is. if you knew the headgasket was blown when you sold it then i would feel morally obligated to try to take care of it, but thats why its always recomened that if you arnt entirly competent with automobiles that you have a vehical checked out by a shop before buying. at the most i would maby offer him $250 back to go towards the replacement of the head gasket. but that is also dependent on how much they paid for it, if they only paid 500 i would tell them well what do you expect for a 500 dollar vehical, if they paid 2-3k for it then 250 would be a fair compromise to me. a head gasket replacement in a shop would probably run in the 500-600 dollar range (i pulled that number out of my ass because i do all my work myself but a head gasket is $25 and probably 8 hours of labor assuming the head is not warped, if it is a machine shop will probably charge about 25-30 to resurface. iv got an head in the mechine shop its costing me 250 to get the head magnafluxed re surfaced valve guides valve guide seals new valves (they were warn beyond the point of mechining) and mechining of the seats. well anywhay sorry for the rambling i just got off a 13 hour shift

Last couple times I've done a head gasket job it cost around $250. When I had a shop look into it, they wanted $1,200 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />. I just wanted justification to do it myself. Made me get off my <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />. $250 is a small price to pay to keep good carma. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
