Getting the Wheeling Fever
Took a couple of trips up to northern AZ the past month and I have this pretty significant vibration in the drivetrain when coasting down hills (letting off the throttle). Once I apply the throttle, it goes away. U joints have never been replaced but lubed religiously. 150k miles with 4" springs and 2" shackles. I have shims between the springs and the perch. Easy way to tell if it's the U-joints or the pinion bearing going south?

Check the u-joints, pinion flange and slip yoke for play. How? Grab ahold of the drive shaft and give it a tug. Also, check the pinion angle, could be it is a little too low:

I'll be giving it the once over this wkend. I also have a digital angle finder that should help with the pinion angle verification.

is it a vibration or a grinding vibration sound? mine does the same ***** i think its more of a grinding vibration in the tranny or tcase, no clue about it tho. gota figure that out so i can drive on the highway again, only does it past 50 mph <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

when you do the shake test on the u joints chock the tires and put it in newtral a load on the shafts can give the false indication of a good tight u joint, any play and they should be replaced.

maybe my shims are in backwards?? I checked the U-joints and they are tight. Checked the angle and it appears that the diff is pointed up at the Transfer case. The shims in place have the wedge section in the rear which tips the diff up. Is this wrong?

With u-joints on both ends, you want the t-case and pinion flanges to end up nearly parallel:

bummer! Just finished taking the shims out and the angles are closer but I'm still 6 degrees off between the two. I'll drive it for a bit and see if there is a reduction in the vibration. If not, I guess I'll be looking into some new shims.
