Last night I did a service on the 89 D50 4x4 2.6L ,while checking the transfer case the oil was low so I topped it up.Took half a liter or more humm.So I buttoned it up & preceded to the trans, undid the filler plug ,& oil was poring out .Is there a seal between the two cases to allow the oil to transfer from one case to the other? Can't really remember now? Thanks

Transfer and tranny are separate. I filled mine transfer once on what didn't seem to be too much of a slant. Then later when checking on leveler ground, a bunch poured out the fill hole. Maybe you had the same?

If you have a 5 speed the cases share fluid. I'm pretty sure anyway.

Well ,I did rebuild the transmission 7years ago , & for the life of me I just can't remember .I thought I had it level enough so I could change engine oil?All I can remember when the trans & transfer were split it had the spacer casing ( which is just a spacer, hollow tunnel ),then a seal & bearing for the out put shaft on the trans to go into on the transfer case hmm...

There may be case flow paths, but there's a seal on the tcase input shaft. The tranny/tcase adapter is wet from the tranny side, since R/5th live out there.

Well, the tcase input shaft seal may be gone.
I think the full levels of the two are different, referenced from the ground. An inspection of the fill plug height would be conclusive. Make damn sure you have it dead level before you check fluid levels. Finally, a real use for the tilt-o-meter....

I know on the newer 5-speeds the tranny and t-case are seperate. Mitsu specs GL5 for the tranny and t-case.
Mine does the same thing, though. Guess it'll tell you how level your garage floor is.

O.K... so making sure the vehicle is perfectly level,is the trans & transfer case perfectly level in the frame,or do they have that little pitch either way ?I guess get the o'l level out & see . So.. if the vehicle is hot & on any kind of hill, slope ect.for period of time it would transfer from one case to the other if the input shaft seal on the transfer case is hooped?Well... then if the tranny is getting more oil then the transfer case ,this would start pushing oil out the front seal on the tranny,or any where there's weak spot gaskets maybe? Is this correct? I guess your right there fasteddy make sure the dam thing is level.
