Les Schwab is so overpriced. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />

I bought and traded parts for the alloys I have (all 8) and bought some cheapy tires....all for around $500. Check out Craigslist, Pirate, and 4x4Wire classifieds, you're likely to find some good used tires for cheap. I ran 25k miles on a set of Pirate sourced tires for $80!

Even WalMart sells BFG all terrains for $125/each or so...

Believe me, there is NO SUBSTITUTE FOR STUDDED TIRES ON ICE!! I live near Snoqualmie Pass (55 miles e/o Seattle). As you know we get a lot of deep snow, snowplow after-freeze, freeze thaw, crusty ice, ice storms etc., etc. During winter the conditions are always changing from hour to hour. Studless tires are a joke. So you'll need a second set of STUDDED tires & wheels for winter.

Your next consideration is whether or not you also need CHAINS. Chains require a lot of wheel-well clearance, so you couldn't use a big diameter tire if you do. You also need to decide how often you will be driving in DEEP snow. Narrow tires work better than wide in deep snow.

All things considered, I recommend a 235x75xR15 LT. Not too tall or wide and they still leave enough room for chains. Tread pattern is a personnal choice, but STUDDED TIRES ARE IMPORTANT.

Under certain conditions maybe. Including those your way? There is no one in the Iceland contingency with narrow tires. Quite the opposite. They go to great lenghts to modify the sheet metal to fit the likes of 38X15.5 or such.

No mods, all stock.

When I put the 33" muds on, I trimmed the front bumper ends just a little, like this:

Second, I cut out the leading edge of the inner fender wells, visible slightly in these frames:

Same tires, level ground with bumper:

Same tires/rims, different Montero with no mods:

Falken Wildpeaks are a cheap AT. I'm considering a set for all-time use instead of switching back and forth. I'm looking at 33's. I think they only make them in 12.5" wide though. I think 30x10.5 would be better for road/highway with a 4cyl.
