I accidentally gave my Taco a boo-boo tonight. While removing the air intake from the throttle body to put some new plugs in, the tube ripped! It was already kind of gone anyway, since the supercharger kind of put more stress on the ribbed bends, so the tear was almost bound to happen.
While attempting to duct-tape that section up as a temporary fix, the plastic coupling at the air box snapped off!!!!!!!!!
Right now, the intake tube is being held together by duct tape at one end, and some RTV gasket seal and zip-ties at the other end!
I'll need a new intake and air box, but the factory will be super expensive.
After going through eBay, it seems like I could get a legit K&N cold air intake (FIPK) for about the same price as the stock parts.
QUESTION: I heard an unsubstantiated rumor that those intakes will make a supercharged V6 run lean. Anybody know for sure?? It's one of those things where someone heard from a friend's brother's cousin's dog's trainer's girlfriend's boyfriend that the intake will trip the MAF sensor and throw codes.
Anyone have any first-hand experience with those puppies on the supercharged motor at all? I'm thinking I might as well just go with the K&N if I'm cornered into spending the money, but don't want to make a stupid decision! I mean, heck, my truck's already being held together with duct-tape and zip-ties!
Thanks!

Hey, man, I've got an OEM tube if you want it. I'll snap some pics in few days when I get the digi cam back from a friend.

Humanoid, I appreciate the offer! If you do take some pics, let me know.
I originally hadn't thought of a junkyard because Toyota scrap parts seem to be a bit hit-and-miss where I live (but there is a Ford and Chevy yard a couple miles down the street from me. Odd... )
If I can get the stock air box and intake tube for cheap, I'll definitely do that. I was wondering about the K&N thing because I thought, "What the heck, might as well upgrade while I'm at it!"

Throwing you back to gadget's site, on his truck, the K&N LOST 10 hp over the stock airbox with deckplate mod.. figure that one out... http://www.gadgetonline.com/AirInduction.htmAlso this is what i would go with if i put an intake on my 4runner http://www.airaid.com/510-734_Toyota.aspit replaces teh tube and the air filter... i would then do the elbow mod and the deckplate mod to get the most power. This set up is proven to give the most power. Oh, and any aftermarket intake (including just doing the deckplate mod) will lean out your supercharged motor unless you are running fuel management.

Man, I shoulda known to check Gadget's site first. Crazy how the truck actually lost power with the intake! But I guess it makes some sense.
I am running fuel management, but I'm still a little hesitant to run out and buy one.
After looking around, I see that I can get a decent price on both the K&N intake or a new intake tube and filter box. So I guess it'll come down to how willing I am to take a chance! Either have the truck "look cool and sound cool," or play it safe and keep to the OEM equipment.

thats the nice thing about the airaid MIT, it's just the tube between the stock box and the motor... while keeping the stock intake box... it's prettymuch like taking the restrictors out of the stock intake but leaving the box stock incase you go offroading and dont want an open element... tis' all... how is your tranny doing?

Yea I definitely like the Airaid. But since my airbox is broken, I'd have to get their whole kit, instead of just the tube.
I ended up getting a super good deal on the K&N unit, and was given the offer to return it for a full refund if it didn't work, so I took it. I was going back and forth between K&N and Airaid (I really like how Airaid uses an actual heat-barrier instead of a half-a$$ed shield like the K&N), but the deal I got was too good to pass up.
Installed it Saturday afternoon in a little under 2 hours, and so far it's actually been great (keeping my fingers crossed!). I was really worried about it leaning out the mixture and loosing power (like with Gadget's experience), but I've seen nothing of it...No check engine light, and no noticable loss in power.
From my initial experience with it, I might have lost a little bottom-end, but have definitely gained top-end, without a doubt. In the past, when under 3/4 throttle at highway speed, it would make no difference if I pushed the pedal the rest of the way; it would just keep the same speed and RPM. Now, when I push it the last 1/4 of the way to WOT, it sends me back into my seat ALL THE WAY till it shifts. Amazing.
I'll keep you all posted if anything new comes up, but for right now, I'd have to say that, at least in MY CASE, the K&N worked out pretty well. We'll see!

You're definately going to need a re tune to make up for the extra air flow (it will give you even more power). Gadget's tests were in his early days prior to the MAF calibrator... when you can tune for more flow... you usually get more power...
