Need a Spot
I've owned CJ's with 258's and the best thing i ever done was install a Weber Carb on it.

I didn't want too hi-jack Jeeperdans thread, but My bro-inlaw bought a 85 CJ with a 258. He also ran it out of gas, now it has a miss to it. I told him from the get-go that he sucked some trash in the carb and it needs rebuilding. He started by new fuel filter, didn't help. 2nd new wires distrb cap new igni module didn't help. He gave into me and i took it over the weekend and took the carb off and cleaned it. Put it back on and it ran better but still has a miss to it. At first it runs good but after alittle while it goes back to spuddering. I looked at it again and remembered that my fuel filter had a return line that ran back to the tank.(it was an 82) Would the wrong fuel filter cause this spitting? I can't find a loose line going back to the tank. I may take the carb back off and do a overnight soak. any pointers?

when you took it apart what did it look like inside? running out of fuel shouldn't cause problems if the carb was protected by a filter.
tht fuel pickup is always picking fuel from the bottom of the tank anyway...so simply using all of the fuel shouldn't cause a problem.

your correct,..........the inside was N A S T Y. I was thinking he put the wrong filter on it. A parts search online shows a filter with 2 inlets and 1 outlet or viseversa. I was thinking it was a fuel pressure isuue.

but the thing was so nasty I may have not got all the crap out of the carb.

Pull her apart again.. Clean the idle system real good.. Remember the idle system NEVER QUITS! If it is idleing badly then there is less fuel at hi speed also as the idle system ability is included in the amount of fuel the hi-speed system puts into the stream..
Them little tubes and passages are sometimes a bear to get clean.
