I thought about doing this myself as well. I changed my mind though when I saw what I was getting into. I found a good off road racing shop that installed the new gearing I provided for $100 per diff. I removed the diffs and brought them to them however. It would have been more if I just dropped off the truck. It's a bit tricky to get the torque and shim stack right and it's a one shot deal if you don't get it right. You have to start over with a new crush sleeve. There are threads here in the forum, I'm sure someone will give you a link. I bought the gears and the install kits online.

X2 what xrtim stated. GEars are tricky, and would be helpful for a first timer to have someone that knows what they are doing teach you how, and inspect your work. $100-150/diff isn't all that bad, when I had mine done it was only $75/diff.

If you want a locker, now would be the time to do it as well, there are some deals out there that I couldn't beat even if I was going to set the gears myself. Last year I paid $1150 for a complete ARB/5.29 3rd member from Davez Off-road Performance, I had to drive an hour to pick up the 3rd and leave mine, but I couldn't get it done locally for under $1400.

What size gears are you going up to?
If only 4.56's or 4.88's, you can get OEM diffs for about $150-200 each, ready to install in your truck, and I think the FJ40 3rd's are the same as the trucks rear is the same(not sure though). The only draw back to the 4.87 OEM rear diff is that you cannot gear higher, you need a non oem 4.87 diff for that.

You should also check Pirate4x4, MarlinCrawlerforums, and Craigslist for your area, there is usually someone parting out a rig, you can usually pick up diffs w/lockers for under $500.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.
'90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction.
'91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed

gears are really easy, you need a dial indicator, and take your time, take your time serious, once you can do it, you will be a god. and other peole will amire you. but it is easy. Randy gears had some good info.
