Sorry for trolling your end of the forum, but I've got a buddy with a 91 4x4 pickup who actually listened to me when I told him to forgo the lift and spend the money on gears and lockers <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" /> That almost made me fall out of my seat. Were it not for my seatbelt, and the door being closed and locked... nevermind.

Anyway, what are his choices for a selectable rear locker for his truck? I think he'd rather have something like an E-locker or an ECTED if possible. He doesn't really like the possibility of air leaks that come with ARB lockers.

TIA

First off I have been running ARB's for 12 years F & R and neither of them has ever leaked.

I perfer ARB over the Toyota E-locker but that is just my opinion.

There is another E-locker that is being developed but I cannot remember who is making. Also Randys R & P is coming out with a clone of the early ARB that is made in China.

Tell your friend that 99% of the time if an ARB leaks it is installer error. Also I have been running the same blue air line in the rear that I put on 12 years ago.

X2 on the ARB. I have had the one in my "90 going on about 7yrs now and no leaks.

The one in my '91 leaked after about 6 engages on the trail, but that was because I didn't get the new style diff housing fitting tightened correctly, to little and it backs out/too much and you tear the O-ring. The leaks my friends have had have also been from either damaging the locker(backed into a rock and dented the housing), running the air line too close to the exhaust manifold, or a loose fitting, all operator error.

You can swap in a Tacoma/'96 newer 4-Runner e-locker with some modification to the non-Taco axle housing, or just swap the entire rear end in. The costs are about the same for a new E-locker/geared diff, and used prices are about the same as well. For the ARB, your buddy can either buy teh ARB compressor, or make his own using a small air tank, and MV50 Superflow(or other named) comp, an ARB pressure switch, and some air line fittings, and save about $100, less if he uses a used comp. I use an old air ride suspension compressor for my ARB, and a small air tank I fab'd up.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.
