Body Damage is Cool
It seems like my Red Top Optima is overcharging. It's venting a strong sulfur smell after driving about an hour. Is the voltage regulator build into the alternator? I know the '01 Rodeo alternator (3.2 liter) is a "smart" alternator that has electronics built into it. The casing of the battery seems a little distorted and I could hear it venting after I stopped. I replaced the alternator about 2 years ago after fording some very deep water. The problem started recently. Otherwise, it starts well and runs the winch without any problem (used winch a few days ago).

Thanks,
Pete

The voltage regulator is built into the alternator. You're right. It sounds like an overcharging condition and could pose an extremely dangerous threat. If you have it serviced and the service center is within 20 miles or so, I would disconnect the alternator from the battery and proceed to the repair shop.Regardless, get it repaired ASAP.
