Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have the strangest problem. Every so often (couple of days) the engine will turn over but not start. It'll run for a couple of seconds until the fuel in the float boal is gone then it dies. When I pull the fuel lines they are all dry. I've tried removing the gas cap while cranking to relieve any pressure that may have built up and visually inspected the fuel lines. They don't appear to be cracked or worn anywhere that I can see. The problem only comes about on warm days. Here's what I know:

- Fuel lines not clogged
- pump works fine as long as there is fuel in the lines
- only happens after it sits and cools down
- fires up just fine after enough pressure builds in the tank to force the fuel to the pump

Where do you think the fuel is going? Could the pump still be causing this problem even though it's not weeping and seems to work just fine? Thanks for any help!

sorry, forgot this - '87 22r

Time to rebuild your carb, or replace the float at least.

That fuel is going into your oil pan; give the dipstick a whiff.

FIX IT. The fuel diluting the oil causes washdown; rings are next.

Change oil and filter.

Well I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump and the issue has been gone for a couple of days so I think <knock on wood> that was the problem. There is a valve in the pump that keeps fuel from flowing back to the tank event under negative pressure so it's my guess that that went bad in the old pump.

FYI - the pump that went bad is the 2nd Advance Auto pump I've put in the truck in the last 2 years. I put in a new Napa pump that looks identical to the original Toyota pump. Now I have to go write "I will never buy another part from Advanced Auto Parts" 100 times so I never do it again!
