Body Damage is Cool

I just remembered a discussion in a group about 30 or 40 years ago. Another example of the "something for nothing" fallacy...
A guy who owned a small sailboat was talking about putting a small outboard motor on it, for use when the wind was dead calm.
One of the other guys in the group asked the boat owner why he didn't just install a large fan on the rear of the boat, and point the fan toward the mid-ship sail in order to make the boat move when where was no wind!
It took the rest of us over 20 minutes to explain to the helpful man why his suggestion wouldn't work!

Equal and opposite reactions, Physics is a wonderful thing. The fan will impart a force to the boat where it is mounted equal and opposite to the wind force the fan can create, so technically since the sail canÆt catch all of the "wind" created by the fan, if the fan was big enough to over come the friction with the water, the boat would actually move backwards. When you think about it a fan is nothing more than a propeller.

And a guy I used to work with installing boat lifts thought if the lift didn't shut off it would keep on winding up and pull its own pilings out.....We had a good laugh at that one day when we got the boss to radio out a bogus service call to us in the field that exactly that had happened. He was saying See, Told You So! till we all about cried laughing..... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
