ouch, your really swinging , I guess i better learn the technical names and functions before I open my mouth, all I really know is I had one hell of a time with the thing you still had to tighten down the bolt on the tensioner if not the tension would loosen and cause a slapping sound. thats why I got good at taken it on and off. I would come pick you up from Columbia my self but my brakes are shot and the gas situation, well you understand. So were set, its the battle of the timing belt change. Looser buys the winner a beer. you should take it easy on the rookie, I am just looking for a little advise and give my 2 cents even when its unwanted.

Naw, there won't be any Battle of the Timing Belt Changes for me, 'cause I know I can't can't change one in 20 minutes and I sure don't believe in playing a man at his own game.

I just want to sit in a rocking chair, eat popcorn, drink beer, ring the bell when 20 minutes is up..... and pick up the betting pool before going back to Columbia.

Heck, if it's the serpentine belt, then I might get in the race.

I have been searching for the widget crank and the continuum transfunctioner for the past week can anyone tell me where they might be? I want to get good at taking them off before the big "race"

My local mitsu dealer says those are obsolete parts and they can no longer source them from Japan. I checked with the local Kragens and the cross-reference search turned up the possibility of replacing the continuum transfunctioner with the bi-lateral sway coupler from a '63 Travelall, but I'm questioning the validity of that since if I recall correctly International Harvester had not yet converted from SAE to metric in 1963 I checked all the local pull-em-apart yards but came up empty.

Oh wait. Were you wondering where they were on your truck? That's easy. The widget crank is on top of the tranny, behind the upper left bell-housing bolt. The continuum transfunctioner was only available on the California models, so you may be out of luck

Updating old thread instead of starting new.

To bring people up to speed with my problems. Around January my Montero was giving me some very odd temp readings. I would also hear alot of air bubbles running through the heater core. I found my cooling system all but empty, topped it up and nursed it home 130 miles from work. I then purchased my Subaru and put the Montero on the back burner. Come a month or so ago I decided to pop the rad cap and it sounded like a coke bottle opening. I topped it up again and ran it for five minutes. I noticed a bad engine knock and when I popped the radiator cap again it gave that coke bottle sound, so I figure its the head gasket. Finally pulled the heads after letting the engine sit on the stand, yep gasket breached (also worth noting the drivers side head had 2 fairly loose head bolts).

Not only did RedHead Rebuilders screw up the bottom end, but they also probably reused the old stretch bolts. I wish I could meet the asshat who rebuilt this engine so I could beat him to death with the old crank.

Notice carbon buildup where arrows are pointing.

dont know if theyre the same part number or not but the 3000gt crowd re-uses the stock head bolts all the time without a problem.

6G72 head bolts are reuseable a few times. The problem is usually that the deck threads aren't clean - or deep enough - and the bolts give false torque readings.... particularly after the heads have been milled.
