85 jeep cj7 6cyl 258 My timing seemed a little off so I got the timing light and turned the distributor until everything sounded good and correct degree setting was set. I killed it and it back fired, so I waited a minute and started it back up. It sounded good. Killed it and tried again a few minutes later and it turned over but would not start. I assumed I had turned distributor too much so I turned it back to original position and tried to start it again. Turned over but would not start. I thought something might have happened to starter solenoid, so disconnected negative cable and replaced starter solenoid. Now it won't do anything. Turn key and nothing. Put other solenoid back on, still nothing. Battery is 100% according to battery tester, but no lights, either. Is there a main power fuse somewhere or maybe the computer MCU went out. Any clues?

Why did you bother with a timing light? If you were going to time it by ear..just go ahead and leave the light on the bench! How do you know the battery is still hot? Do you hear a click when you turn the key? Do you have it in PARK or the clutch pressed? If you find a way to get it to turn over put a light on it with the vac hose off of the dist and have someone else turn it over while you look at where it is timed now.. Then adjust it till it starts and retime it properly. Big Jim <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

Just wondering - if the engine turned over but did not fire - why mess with the starter solenoid? I would check and make sure you are getting spark first. If the engine turns over and does not start it is one of three - spark, fuel and air. I would check spark - ignition system first (distributor, coil, wiring, etc.) since you were playing with the timing.

Everything is hooked up. Battery is good, cables clean. When I turn the key there is nothing. No click no sounds, no lights, but the horn still works.

try the ignition switch that is bolted on the steering column just inside the dash. When you turn the key it moves a rod that goes down the left side of the steering column . The rod moves the internals of the switch. There are 2 types, one for a tilt and one for a non tilt steering. These switches sometimes die and then when you turn the key nothing happens. You should be able to get one for under $30 new or pretty much free from a junkyard out of many GM cars.
