Parking Brake Cable "Connection"? #896084 07/18/08 03:17 AM

I just cashed in my 00 taco to toyota but not before stealing the rear axle with the Elocker. Anyways I'm stuffin it under my '85 now and tryin to figure out the parking brake. I have the cable from the tacoma and the '85 and I think I'm going to have to mix the two together to get it to work.
I am not sure whats the best way to join or clamp two cables together, meaning connecting two cut ends together. Obviously it must be very strong. Any ideas on how I should do this? I could by a t-case brake but i'm tryin not to spend so much money. Thanks

well its technically a safety issue, so proceed at your own risk but they do sell cable connectors at (OSH here, I dont know if they have those where you are) maybe ace hardware? anyway you could use a couple or three on the section you want to splice. dont cut the cables til you have the connectors so you know how much overlap you will need. oh yea and make sure that the splice isnt in a critical area where in-line movement of the cable cannot be restricted for obvious reasons. who knows how strong that will be, but its something. OR you could maybe swap out the brake backing plate assemblies. but i do not know if the two are compatible.

It should just be the case of the '85 cable being too short, correct? If so, probably easiest to extend both ends as needed. Folks have used my e-brake extensions for that. For a cable extension, just run the extension across the top of the e-brake lever instead of up and down as shown below:

You might also end up failing inspection if you go to someplace that actually looks at things and are picky about the splice.

Another possibility is doing away with the rear axle brake setup and installing a rear driveshaft disk brake.

Thanks for the replys. The problem is infact that the 85 cable is too short. I think I'll steal Roger's idea and just fab up some extensions to run horizontally to make up the distance. I will just have to cut the cable center pivot post off the axle and reweld it in the correct position. Same goes for the cable guides. I should have thought of making these simple extensions earlier. Thanks for your thoughts. If I get to it soon I'll post some pics.
