Need a Spot
i've got a 86 1 ton with a 22re, runs great, but when starting cold after sitting a few days , it take a lot of cranking to start it, Im guessing the fuel system is bleeding off pressure somewhere, maybe through the fuel injection pump in the fuel tank ? there are no external leakes anywhere so it must be back through the fuel tank ?? I dont have much troubleshooting experience with the FI 22r's, all my others are carburated ! thanks !

Try the fuel pump test jumper for starters:

BTW, Roger: This trick did fix my starting problem as well on my 88 22RE. But since the AFM and Circuit Open Relay passed all the listed tests, does that mean the fuel pump itself may be failing? Is it possible for the open circuit relay to pass the test, but still be faulty, as you suggested in your article? Just curious. And not intentionally hijacking the thread.

I also wanted to ask what others were using for jumpers on the diagnostic connector on the PS fender. I tried several different size wires and they either kept coming loose or just wouldn't make a good connection. A trip to Radio Shack proved useless. I found a box of electrical jumpers, like for a circuit board. Twisting the ends of 3 of these together seemed to be just about the right size to fit tightly and make a good connection, but it sure looks hokey.

Have heard one of the coils on the CO relay can get weak over time and not pull in the CO relay contacts hard enough to make good contact. I had something like this on my '85 with the starter coil and ran with the jumper installed for a few years. Then one day I pulled the jumper and found the relay was working fine (and has ever since).

I used a pair of spade lug connectors on the end of a short length of wire in mine (older style connector):

But later replaced the jumper with a switch:

Of course since doing that, have not had a problem with the CO relay or fuel pump.

I use a paperclip, bent into a "U"... sometimes have to dig the tips around in there to clean out the contacts, but it works every time. Cheap, easy, and available.

With 200+ Billion electrical parts, the world most complicated machine is inside your own skull.

Question Reality.

Aww, c'mon. You can make it sound a little harder than that. Pretend it takes a "special kind" of paper clip or something.
