I have done lots of oil filter examinations where I found the odd chip or flake, there was nothing wrong with the engine. I have done lots of samples for oil analysis and even those with small flakes were considered normal.

Body Damage is Cool
I suppose the odd small flake is no big deal...I just remember tearing Eli's Oil filter apart and seeing many many LARGE metal chunks haha...it brought back horrific memories.

Well, i went ahead and changed it at 5000K. I also lubed it - which I've been doing every 10000-15000K. The reason I asked is the price of oil & filters here is outrageous. $18 for the filter, which I guess isn't too bad, but $6-7 liter for oil?

But I did try something new. I took off the filter with the engine cold. I wrapped a plastic bag around it and no mess. About a cup of oil or less drained from the filter so I figure no big deal on the same amount of old oil still in the system after the change.

If only it was that cheep. I was just qouted from Napa $55.00 ea for the appropriate oil filter. I managed to get two from a part shop called Auto Value and they were only $32.00 ea. Normally I get them through a friend owned part shop at cost but they still are over 20 bucks. Oil is a bit cheeper at 13.00/4L for Rotella T. For this reason I change my oil every 8000km and a fresh filter everytime. I always put a new filter even if I was running gas and changing the oil every 4-5000km. I mostly do highway driving and about 140km/day. I will change my oil sooner if I am in dirty dusty conditions and on occasion run a pre oil change cleaner through such as seafoam or like my last one, just Mr. Gunk. 5 mins and a quieter diesel guaranteed.

Nigel's right. A lot also has to do with how and where you're driving it. My regular drive is an hour on the highway, full warm-up, no starting and stopping, no quick starts/shutdowns, and a few minutes of slow speed at the end, followed by a minute or two of idle. This is 10 months of the year. I push my interval to 8500kms, fresh filter every time, synthetic Rotella.

Phil, where do you get your synthetic Rotella? I am interested in giving it a try and knowing what benefits you have noticed.
