1985 cj7 258 6 cylinder
Timing was off. I followed steps to statically set timing. I manually turned engine until timing mark is set to 8 degrees before TDC. I adjusted distributor and rotor so that narrow end of rotor with metal is lined up with no. 1 plug tower on distributor cap. Also getting spark to number one plug, but still not starting. What else can I try.

You do know that the timing mark comes around twice for every #1 plug firing don't you? You MAY have it timed for the wrong plug!! It is a common mistake.
The dist goes around once for every two times the crank goes around..

Thought that was the case since there is mention of a compression stroke and exhaust stroke. So if I turn rotor 180 degrees from where it is then I might be in the right position, correct?

That or just move all the plug wires 3 places to the left..

Body Damage is Cool
When finding TDC on the #1 cylinder, do the following to insure that you're at TDC on the compression stroke, not TDC on the exhaust stroke:

When rotating the engine, put your thumb or finger on the spark plug hole in the head, effectively sealing it. When the piston comes around to TDC, if it tries to blow your finger off of the hole, you're on the compression stroke (both valves closed). If there's not much pressure on your finger when the piston comes up (because the exhaust valve is open), then you're on the exhaust stroke.

Ok, thanks for info. I am pretty sure I am at TDC on compression stroke now, but turns over strong but will not start. Tried priming the carb but only get the spitting hiss noises. Problem originally started when adjusting timing and there was a backfire. Started once after that but not anymore. Maybe time to rebuild carb. What could have happened to carb to cause this? If this is the problem.

Lefty the carb ain't the problem... get it running and then think bout the carb or other problems..

Latest update. Now if I prime carb it will run for about 10-15 seconds and die. Also noticed that when I manually pull back throttle linkage a couple times I do not see gas spurting into throttle body. It used to squirt from the two jets.

Maybe fuel pump is out or jets clogged?

Lefty inside the carb is a little PUMP that pumps those squirts out when the pedal is pressed.. It must be malfunctioning.. Also the float may be stuck shut and not allowing gasoline into the carb bowl..
I think someone that knows that carb should take it apart and get it to working as it should.

Those 2 little jets have very small holes and are easily plugged, try a can of compressed air from a computer store to blow them out.
