was just watching a show recorded 7/25 and saw this commercial for a commemorative 9/11 special issue, guaranteed authentic, LIBERIAN $20 bill.

"available at face value" So, does this mean I can buy it for 30 cents? They clearly state it is liberian currency but do a lot to present it as US currency. P!sses me off.

They use that BS line for just about every single coin advertised on TV. That allows them to say "legal tender" about 70 times during the commericial, leading you to believe it's a real coin instead of the gold painted steel piece of junk that it is...then at the very end...they say it's Liberial legal tender...so technically they're not lieing.

Thing is, anyone dumb enough to be taken by these companies, probably have no idea what or where Liberia is and they are such a dirt poor country, that I'm sure they have no problem signing off on these coins and their own "legal tender" for whatever fee or kickback they get.

The crappy model trucks they sell are always funny too. You can either go to Wal-mart and buy that junk or you can order it off the commerical for only 3 easy payments of 19.95, but wait...this one is really rare....

Commercial started playing when I clicked on this thread... It announces its Liberian legal tender at the very beginning of the commercial. So I guess they are not lying. Kinda Sh!tty how they are milking people using the whole 9/11 line. Also I like how they say its struck in 99.9% pure silver LEAF <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

They have been doing that for a while. I thought it was odd to have America represented on West African currency. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Wonder what the insertion fees are on that starting bid. They have another for only $250,000.00, why buy the higher priced one? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

The practice of annoucing it at all, much less at the beginning is fairly new. They used to only have it in small print at the very end of the commerical. Nothing verbal, so I imagine they got their <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" /> slapped by the gov'ment.

Oh and by the way, that piece of garbage is worth 20 "Liberian dollars". Liberia does call its currency "dollars" just like many countries do, i.e. Canada, Austrailia, etc. So it is "technically" worth 20 "dollars". But 20 Liberial dollars is worth...are you ready.....

.32 U.S. cents. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

You can't make that up. You're actually buying a piece of steel for $20 U.S. dollars, that is only worth .32 U.S. cents in Liberian currency. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Actually it's only funny until you realize our country is so chock full of so many idiots that fall for this. That definately does not speak well for us.

indeed - which is why I was wondering if I could just send them 30 cents <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
I guess a lawyer had them pepper in the word liberian enough to prove they're not being deceptive, though the use of the terms "face value" and $20US is certainly an attempt at deception.

I could see some older folks perhaps falling for it - maybe not seeing the whole commercial or not able to read the fine print at the end.

Liberia is a sad story country wise, they are a sort of a bastard child of the USA gone very wrong. Their flag is almost identical to ours <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" /> We never send them any aid until the civil war broke out...but we will dump billions into out places
