Getting the Wheeling Fever

Hi all, I have an 88 Raider with the 4 cyl. 5 speed. Was doing some PM stuff yesterday since I didn't take her fishing. I was letting the engine idle for just a few minutes and checking tire pressure..adding air etc. I noticed a moderate amount of white smoke coming out of the tailpipe.
I've really take to heart, the suggestions on this board. I drove this from Long Island (where I bought it) home to Florida. First thing I did, flush and fill radiator, replace thermostat, replaced upper and lower radiator hoses. Always checking oil level, etc... Anyway... I felt sick when I saw that smoke. Checked temp, oil pressure, etc. all fine and normal. I shut her down and am looking for an answer...
In your opinion...what could be the cause of the smoke?
help? Thanks,

Maybe only valve stem seals leaking oil.

Get a good smell of it.
If it smells sweet, it's anti-freeze. Stinks, oil.

I'd let it run (drive it fairly hard) until the temps stabilize in the exhaust, then check for smoke.
Some water will condense in the tail pipe, and only start to boil off (white steam) as the tailpipe and cat temps come up to normal, then should disappear. If it continues, retorque the head bolts NOW.
Ditto the smell test. Sweet white is antifreeze, and you need a head gasket, carb base gaskets, or a head (crack). Look for bubbles and surging in the radiator neck as the engine comes up to op temp. This is a head gasket or cracked head.
Oil burning smells like oil dripped on a hot exhaust, for a comparison, and is rings or valve stem seals. At idle, engine vacuum is very high. Another test for rings/stem seals (mostly rings) is to accel to 5000 in 3rd with a hot engine, and let off the gas and let the truck decel against engine braking, watching for a cloud of blue smoke out the tailpipe.
If it's oil, change the pcv valve before you tear into the engine...
Not responsible for advice not taken...

Thanks for the replies. Drove it today for 15 - 20 minutes in stop and go traffic and up to 50 mph. No smoke. Parked and let it run a few minutes. No smoke. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> I'll check check those items and let you know.
Thanks!!

"it" happens to me every time I fire up. Are are using it for short trips only? I think that's what my problem is. "It" happened about a more than a year ago to me.
