Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
I'm trying to get the CV shaft out to change the boots ('88 4x4 p.u.) but just can't get it to drop through the lower control arm. My local certified Toyota mechanic told me that at the dealer they drop the lower control arm. Sounds right to me but after disconnecting everything, including loosening the control arm bolts, sway bar bushing, and ball joint connections, it won't drop for anything! I've smacked it with a 4# hammer and broken a screw-in puller arm trying to push the ball joint shaft through. Is this thing just rusted fast or have I missed something? Any ideas on how to get the control arm to drop? Thanks!!

This is how my neighbor showed me how to do it. He is the Foreman at Roseville Toyota. This shows me doing it on a TRE but I have also used it on balljoints. Take the cotter key and nut off. ![[Linked Image]](http://pics.montypics.com/oops/2008-07-29/1217394076_tre_removeal.jpg)

oops, I think he's talking about getting the front half shaft out by droping the lower A-arm. I'll keep that in mind when I have to replace the it in the field. I think I used a ideler arm puller when I did my SAS.

Don't drop the a-arm... Pound the studs out of the stub shafts, grind the splines off of them before re-installation.
With the studs out, the half-shafts will fall right out. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
