Getting the Wheeling Fever
I need a new engine for my 1990 3.0L v6 montero and saw an ad for a JDM 4m40 pajero turbo diesel with 5 spd transfer case etc. or one with an auto and transfer case and I'm thinking about the conversion... Has anyone done this? Has the 4m40 got a good reputation? Does the 4m40 require an ecu or does it have mechanical injection? Is the auto trans
computer controlled ? Any thoughts or insights would help helpful.
Thanks Gordon

For what it's worth, the local MMC dealer says the 4M40 is more reliable than the 4D56 - timing chain instead of belt. It seems to be a bit more powerful and use the same or less fuel. You can check http://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/ and http://www.pocuk.com/forums/index.php for more info. My experience is that operating costs are similar. Diesels, generally speaking, are 20% more fuel efficient (In OZ they keep the cost of diesel 20% higher). The cost of everything on a diesel is higher - parts, filters etc. 4M40 parts will be hard to find in the U.S.
All that being said, I'd like to try the same thing, but with a manual transmission.

As far as I know, the 4D56 is a direct swap from the 3L V6, but don't think the 4M40 is, as the transmissions, engine mounts, etc. are different.
