Getting the Wheeling Fever
Russ put a battery in the new Montero, fired it up and a horrible noise started occurring. There was good oil pressure and the noise was louder when revved up. It went "bang, bang, bang"...

He finally bought me a running Montero, but it still needs work. What are your thoughts?

chitty chitty bang bang???

Just kidding, its probably rod knock.. but the good news is that with all those monteros.. its not all that difficult to make one engine out of two if one's got bad electronics, and has a good bottom half, etc.. or am I thinking like myself again?

OK, advise:

I have the 91 LS that dT really wants the oil pan from, so I have to pull the engine anyway. How durable are the 3L short blocks when run with no water for about 10 miles?

The PO was this looooooooopy hippy chick who let her 17 year old son kick the Montero for overheating. They had to have cigarettes, so they drove the Monty.

How about just changing the con rod bearing? Stifle your laughs, I did this on my 68 Buick and drove for another month before the license expired....

Provided the crankshaft was not damaged and within spec.. you shouldn't have any problems replacing the bearings and going along.. but think about all the metal shavings that have traversed through the engine, oil pump etc..

Yah, I said about my Buick, but it was wasted...used 60 wt racing oil, 1.5 qts every 200 miles...loosey goosey.

I'm going to have to evaluate the 91 engine, everything V6 here has about the same 225K miles on it.
