First of all can I convert a regular locking hub to Auto locking hubs? Also Pros and cons on both. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

auto locking.. drivetrain wear faster, cvs, and more drag giving lower mpg.

autos are nice if you are lazy

Yes, they can be swapped, just reverse the procedure on the page below:

When the auto hubs work properly, you should have no extra drag or drive train wear as they should unlock once you are in 2WD. Main issues with them is that they can act up and either not lock when you need them to or they can unlock when they should not. For example, if you get stuck and the front tires can turn, the hubs will not lock automatically, since they need the wheels to turn to engage the hub. They can also unlock in reverse.

With manual hubs, you have full control, they are locked when you lock them and unlocked when you unlock them.

You know what sucks about auto hubs? if you park in your driveway in 2wd, and it snows alot, and you try to pull out, it wont get in 4wd, because you have to move 5-10 feet to get them to lock. i laugh at auto-hubbed trucks that cant get out of their driveway. plus it's a pain, you have to drive in reverse for 5-10 feet if you want to unlock them, then if u go too far they will lock in reverse. keep the manual hubs, theyre stronger to boot, and better MPG....

What about the Toyota ADD hubs? No need to drive in reverse and no need to have the wheels turning to engage....

Yes, you can retrofit ADD, but a lot more work. You need to change out the front axle parts with the ADD actuator. You would need to add the VSVs, vacuum cannister and all the electrical and vacuum connections to make the actuator work. Then you would need the transfer case set up for ADD with the internal switches and whatever else it has, so that would be a major conversion.

And then the drawback is you have the front CV axles constantly turning and wearing out the CV boots.

Incorrect. Toyota's auto locking hubs unlock. When unlocked, they have no different impact on the drivetrain than standard lockouts.

Having said that, my experience is that the Toyota auto locking hubs are horribly unreliable...

I think the OEM Aisin auto-locking hubs are your only choice for that type of hub. You might be able to trade someone with automatics for your manuals. Or find a set on a late '80s vintage pickup or 4Runner.

What is wrong with your current manual hubs?

I think I'll just stick with the manuals I thought you can get mile markers make them but maybe that's only for the manuals I'll check into that
