I've never towed before with my Taco. Even though she would probably do great, I've always been afraid of the adverse effects of the transmission strain (overheating, burning clutches, etc.).
I've been thinking about getting a tow hitch installed so I don't have to keep borrowing the work truck when I take two personal watercraft to the lake for the weekend. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />
Modern PWC weigh about 1000lbs each, give or take, in addition to the trailer's weight. I'm pretty sure the whole "shibang" would be under the 5000lb towing limit, but I REALLY don't want to put added stress on the engine or transmission, ESPECIALLY with the added power from the supercharger.
What are everyone's thoughts on Tacomas towing this sort of thing? If you guys are doing it without any problems, I might just buy the hitch. But if I have to install a tranny cooler or worry about rebuilding the thing after a few trips, it's not worth it!!
Thanks! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Keep it OUT of OD (unless you are going downhill/flat grade) and a tranny cooler and VB mod are nice. It should tow 2 sea-doo's no problem, unless they are the new huge ones, they are prob around 5-700lbs each, plus trailer, it will do it no problem.

Really? Installing a cooler wouldn't be that bad, and I'd want one with a S/C anyway. I have a gage (the sender can be installed inline) and the temp reaches 180 on some highway driving (not towing anything). Without the cooler, I'd bet it would exceed the safe zone for the fluid. Anyway, I wouldn't be worried about towing that load with a cooler.

Don't get me wrong, the tranny cooler would definitely be worth it -- if I could afford it on top of the load of the other small repairs/upgrades slowly building up. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />
I guess I was just curious if I could get away with with towing without worrying about burning things up. If I had to install the cooler, it might make me hold off on the hitch for a little while.
It seems like it's a much safer bet to just wait till I can afford a cooler, then go from there. So thanks for the input, guys!

Oh yea Greg, as for the VB mod goes, I'm planning on doing that as soon as my next tranny fluid change comes around.... sounds like it'll do a tranny good!
(On second thought, "Doing a tranny good" isn't the best choice of words......) <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />
