Fix it ASAP. There is a kit at the dealer that includes all the boots/clamps/grease to do one axle.

Since one of the boots is split you better check the joints for play before you start taking axle apart.

DO NOT SCREW UP THE SEAL ON THE WHEEL END OF THE AXLE. You cannot get it anymore, the new part requires you to replace the interfacing seal on the steering knuckle.

IMHO, just replace the axle. A brand new axle with new boots already installed is about $90 from NAPA. It will save you a whole lot of time/mess/hassle.

As for your current axle, if you plan on keeping it and replacing the boots, then do it ASAP before the lack of grease causes damage. If you don't plan on keeping it, it will likely work ok for quite some time before it starts clicking unless you use 4wd a lot.

Thanks for the replys. the only reason I was concerned is because I did do some beach cruising with it like that so I am assuming that I did get sand in there so I guess I should replace the entire axle. I am asumming that the front axles only spin when it is 4 wheel drive so I should be okay for the trip home which is about 500 miles.

Unless you have manual hubs, they'll be spinning all the way home.
