I have a 1985 Toyota with the stock 22r engine and carb setup. I had some major problems about 6 months ago with the oringinal carb and after a shop worked on it for a week and could not resolve the the problem I purchased a used carb off of ebay and dropped it in and the truck has been running great ever since.

Then about a week ago I was driving a long and took my foot off the gas to stop at a light and it cut off. I roll started it and then it cut off again. I had to keep my foot on the gas to keep if the idle from dropping so low that it would just cut off. It runs great when I am on the highway or driving a long but as soon as I take my foot off of the gas it cuts off. After about 2 days of this it now will not start at all unless I pour some gas in the carb. It will start fine then but same problem as before it will not continue to idel unless I keep my foot on the gas.

I pulled the carb off and rebuilt it but nothing changed.

I am at a loss for the next step.

Thoughts that I have.
Its not the fuel pump as it will run after it gets started, so the carb is getting fuel.
Its not the fuel filter for same reason as above, although this is the next thing and probablly should have been the first thing I replaced. I replaced it when I was haveing the problems with the oringal carb.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is an idle stop solenoid on the carb. Make sure there is power to it when the truck is running. You should be able to hear it click when the ignition/power is on. Have some one click the ignition switch for you while you are near the carb.
No clicky, no worky.Find power loss and fix.

First, Thanks for the suggestions. I checked for a click when the ignition switch is turned on and there is click from the selinoid. I went the next step and pulled the round green plug and ran two wires for the hot and groud for the selinoid and grounded the ground and hit the + terminal on the battery, same click.

I poured some gas in teh carb and had my wife keep her foot on the pedal as I adjusted the idel adjustment all the way open and then she took her foot off. I then backed it back to a point where it began to die and the went forward about .5 of a turn and then stopped. It is not reving over what it did before the problem but it does not run as smooth as before, but it does nto cut off. I took it for a drive, no problems when I stopped or when I let off the gas. But when I got home and turned it off, I can not get it started again. I have to pour gas in the top of the carb.

Would you say it is about time to get a professionally rebuilt carb?

it may not be the fuel pump.. but it could be a clogged fuel filter.... and also if the fuel pump is going bad, it may need a lot of rpm to make it pump enough fuel to make it pump..

I replaced the fuel filter before I took the steps listed in my last post. Once you get it started by pouring a little fuel in the carb it will idle with no problem. I little rough but not bad. I took fuel line off of the carb and turned the motor over and plenty of gas is being pumped. Thanks for the suggestion but there is no issue with the fuel filter and the pump is working fine.

Another thing to check is the vacuum advance on the distributor. The timing only gets advanced at idle and when coasting in gear, and non-advanced timing will definitely make a difference at idle. Unfortunately, it's a hundred buck part, even at the cheapest parts houses.

Ok, Next question. How do you check the vacuum advance on the distrubuter to see if it is working correctly?

Sorry, realized after I posted it wasn't the most useful info ever.

Two ways to check it.

One, with the car off, pull the vacuum hoses off of it, and suck on each one. You shouldn't be able to keep sucking air through them. Or, if you have a vacuum pump, you can take the cap off, and watch the arm attached to the diaphragm to see if it moves when you apply vacuum.

Two, which doesn't really apply here since it isn't idling real well, you can pull off and plug the lines while it's running, and the idle should drop or the engine should die. Either way, the idle should change for the worse.

Thanks for the additional info. I pulled off the two vacuum lines that run to the distributor and sucked on both lines and on each line you can feel the diaphram pull and then stop when a vacuum is reached and then you are unable to suck anymore air.

This thing has really got me puzzled.
