Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
I have an 86 Toyota Pickup with a 22r. Last night I was returning home from the store, I slowed down for a stop sign, put in the clutch and the motor RPMs increased. I let out the clutch and it accelerated very quickly without me touching the gas pedal. I was thinking that the linkage on the carb was stuck, but upon inspection, the linkage was fine. I have cleaned it and done everything else I can think of. I did notice that the boot on the accelerator pump was torn, but I do not know if that could have anything to do with it.
I don't have a tach, but I am guessing that I was pretty close to redlining the engine.
When I was driving home after the problem started, I was doing 50 mph, without touching the pedal. (unwanted cruise control). I could downshift to lower my speeds and it wasn;t too bad, but obviously something is wrong. It ran fine as long as it had a load on the moter (clutch engaged). I rebuilt the carb about two years ago and it has been fine. I suppose I could rebuild it again, but don't really want to if not necessary. I crank it, and it starts fine, then begins to accelerate again after a second or two.
I figure some of the carb experts on the board might have an idea of what sort of problem this is. I am sure it is obvious, but not to me.

As far as the choke, I changed it to manual a while back. Seems to be fine.
The throttle return looked good to me. How do you test the throttle solenoid? Also, how would you check the accelerator pump itself, besides just visually checking for holes?
I didn't mention, and don't know if it matters, but the fuel level is exactly halfway in the glass where its supposed to be.

Well not sure on both questions I'll have to read my repair manual if you have one it might help you find out what's wrong let me check and I'll get back to you.

Sounds like you check the obvious things such as sticky linkage. If you're sure thats fine and it started happening while you were driving, I'd say your driver's side motor mount is broken. The motor will torque over and jam the throttle wide open.
I can't think of anything else that would make the carb rev up, seeing as you didn't touch anything before it started happening. If the accelerator pump were blown I'm pretty sure you would have the opposite affect. Also, I am not aware of any throttle solenoid..
Check the motor mount. h <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I did check try seeing if the throttle postion module is messed up or the Dash pot. If you don't have a repair manual they are pretty cheap Hayes or Chilton there anywhere from $15-30 I'll let you know when I refure to the book again on how to test it and adjust it.

When you have a broken motor mount, it is not noticeable by checking the throttle linkage while the truck is sitting still. The throttle linkage will seem just fine, along with everything else. It only jams when the motor moves and releases once the torque is gone. I would strongly suggest checking the motor mounts by c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y and slowly jacking up the engine. Use a wooden block to spread the load. Observe the motor mount. If the mount separates as the motor rises, guess what? Broken mount. Cheap, and relatively easy to fix on the 22 motors.

Dude, he's got a carburetor. None of the stuff you're talking about applies.
