My coworker has 440K miles (documented) on his 87 Sami. Like my Raider, it's a work car. Poor Sami! 3 engines, 4 trans, 2 t-cases, it has metal fatigue enough that the tailgate is falling off, the rear spring shackle bushings are gone, but the things still goes and goes.

I have 2.5 Sami's and a new 08 Grand Vitara. I love the old Sami's but finally had to bite the bullet and pick up a new daily driver... something with a warranty that 'others' had to fix if something went wrong. I like to wrench, but I don't like doing it in a rush to assure a ride to work on Monday.

Their loss. Full aluminum engine, geardriven transfer case, offset drop out 3rd member pumpkins, short wheel base. More power, transfercase gears and lockers, and you are making other rigs look STOOPID off road.

Only bummer is the anemic 1.3, the effectively .6:1 reduction in the transfer case (low range over high range) and no power steering. But sold new for less than 10 grand, what can you expect?

Lockers are cheap for them, birfield rings help save the front axles, and the cheapest transfer case gearset drops your high range a little (12%?) and low range all the way to 4.16:1 for an effective drop between high and low range of about 2.6:1.

Great little rigs.

Its to bad there are so few of us. I've been working hard on my sami lately and my wire time has been suffering. However the zook is alive and working well.

Oh and its stock from the bellhousing to the rear output <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Heres the most recent pic. I'm so proud, its all grown up. Bought it stock 8 or so years ago. First 4wd I owned.
